This is the former relationship between the deceased cured vampire/human doppelgänger, Stefan Salvatore; the vampire, Damon Salvatore; and the tribrid-doppelgänger, Alexandria Gilbert.
Similar to how both Stefan and Damon were in love with Katherine, they later both fell in love with Alex. Unlike Katherine, she did not enjoy the two fighting over her, nor did she entertain the two simultaneously. She initially dated Stefan and had a rocky friendship with Damon as she was nervous, assuming he was a killer. Over time, however, she became Damon's first friend and began to bring out his emotions. The friendship eventually fell apart when both Stefan and Alex fell into Klaus' clutches and Alex eventually started to fall for Klaus. Damon didn't want to believe the woman he fell for didn't love him back, he kissed her trying to prove something to her but it didn't change her mind that she was always in love with Stefan. This love triangle ended when she had feelings for Klaus and Stefan, creating a new love triangle.
