The Divine Coven are one of the most powerful coven of witches. It goes back thousands of years, to 22nd Century B.C. They are known to make different dimensions so that their ancestors could still communicate with them. They have made Prison Worlds for the worst of the worst of the evil monsters. It's known to be worse than the Phoenix Stone and Hell combined.
Membership into the coven seems to be earned by birthright (and in rare cases, by marriage/child birth), and people are still considered to be members of the coven even if they lose or unable to practice magic in the case of Arielle Labonair and Hayley Marshall.

Maria Flemming has said to her granddaughters that the Divine Coven has a history of doing black magic. She has said that black magic feels natural and that their was moments throughout history where the strongest of the witches in the coven has turned dark and killed to then use to grow stronger. In season three of Legacies we find out that Irene was the witch to start the tradition of black magic and cursed the coven. Alina in her spirit form visits Alex and says that when she was born she broke the curse that Irene casted.
