This was the former love triangle between the vampire, Milton Greasley, the human, Ethan, and the tribrid Nina Salvatore.
Both MG and Ethan are in love with Nina and she hates the position she's putting them both in not being able to choose who se wants. When Nina dated MG she jumped into Malivore with her sister Hope and his memories of her was erased, causing him to have an interest in Lizzie Saltzman. Nina went to Mystic Falls High for a short amount of time and she met Ethan and they got close real fast.

In Do All Malivore Monsters Provide This Level of Emotional Insight?, Ethan and MG quickly built a friendship despite MG not liking Ethan to began with. Nina was shocked and happy that her ex/best friend and current boyfriend are friends now. Ethan now knows that Nina is a tribrid and that MG is a vampire.
