22nd Century B.C.[]

  • Witches hearing about The Old Ones.
  • Several decades prior to 2200 B.C., Arcadius, the world's first psychic, was born in the Mediterranean region.
  • Around 2200 B.C., Arcadius accidentally used his psychic gift to read the mind of a powerful village leader and learned his impure thoughts for very young girls, a revelation that caused the leader and the rest of the village to turn against him. Upon being bound and burned at the stake, Arcadius, in excruciating physical pain from the flames and emotionally distressed by the villagers betraying him, inadvertently unleashed a blast of psychic energy moments prior to his death that was so powerful, it created a new dimension called Hell.
  • After Arcadius created Hell, he began bringing in the spirits of those who had committed heinous sins in their lives, feasting on and tormenting their souls for eternity. This cycle would continue for another thousand years or so, when the Traveler witch Qetsiyah created her own afterlife dimension, which was a purgatory that trapped the souls of supernatural creatures. In most, but not all cases, this prevented anyone who was supernatural from finding peace or going to Hell until the Other Side's destruction in the 21st century.
  • Some time after Arcadius' death, his enemies forged a weapon known as the Staff of Arcadius. This weapon has the ability to disrupt a psychic's powers and inflicts them with an extremely painful headache.
  • Around this time the Divine Coven and Trinity Coven was created.

8th Century B.C.[]

  • Seline, a powerful young psychic, was exiled to an island when villagers discovered her supernatural identity. Shortly afterward, another young psychic, Sybil, met the same fate, ending up on the same island and befriending Seline. The two then became so close that they referred to each other as "sisters" due to being the only family they had.
  • Due to their new home being scarce in resources, Seline showed her how to use her psychic abilities to both amplify each other's power level while also attracting ships in order to be rescued. However, when the first ship crashed into the jagged rocks on the coast, everyone on the ship perished, and Sybil vowed never to use her powers in that way again, believing that if they couldn't live on what "God" provided, then they didn't deserve to live at all. Seline, who had secretly become a cannibal in order to survive on the island, raided the ships for needed items and passed off the flesh of the dead sailors as being animal meat, deceiving Sybil while converting her to a cannibalistic diet.
  • 750 B.C.
    • When Sybil learned that she had been feeding on the flesh of innocent men all of her life, she became so distraught that she attempted to commit suicide by jumping off a cliff. When Seline found her dying in the forest, she prayed to "God" to save her, only for the spirit of Arcadius, a deceased psychic and ruler of Hell, to approach them instead. Seline, recognizing Cade by the stories they had heard about him, begged him to save Sybil's life at any cost. Cade ultimately agreed to given the sisters eternal life and youth, on the condition that they feed on the flesh of evildoers who were sent to hell upon death while bringing him their souls for eternal punishment.

1st Century B.C.[]

  • The oldest known ancestor of the Salvatore Family, Silas, was born. He was born into a very wealthy and noble family of witches, and eventually became one of the more gifted witches in his community, alongside of Qetsiyah, the most powerful witch in all of history. He, his former fiancée Qetsiyah, and his true love Amara shaped the majority of the events that created the present day world. Silas eventually became the progenitor of the Salvatore bloodline, as well as the Salvatore line of doppelgängers.
  • The oldest known ancestor of the Bennett Family, Qetsiyah, was born. She was born into a very wealthy and noble family of witches. Qetsiyah is known to be one of the most powerful witches in history, rivaled only by Silas. It's argued that Qetsiyah, along with Silas and Amara, helped to shape the future of all of the characters and events in the series.
  • The oldest known ancestor of the Petrova Family, Amara, was born. Unlike Silas and Qetsiyah, Amara was born into a poor and downtrodden human family, and eventually grew up to be Qetsiyah's handmaiden. Amara eventually became the progenitor of the Petrova doppelgängers.
  • Silas and Qetsiyah, two of the most powerful witches in their community, worked together to create the first spell of immortality.
  • At some point in their early adulthood, Silas became engaged to Qetsiyah, who was described on several occasions as being his best friend. However, unbeknownst to Qetsiyah, Silas was also engaging in an affair with her handmaiden, Amara, a mortal with whom he was truly in love.
  • Silas and Amara became the very first immortal beings in the world, created with the use of magic, aside from the pre-existing immortal Sirens, who are a similar but different type of immortal monster, created with the use of magic. Qetsiyah and Silas were originally intended to drink the immortality elixir that Qetsiyah had created at their wedding, but Silas instead ended up stealing it and drinking it with Amara, his true soulmate and love of his life, so that they could spend eternity together.
  • An angry, vengeful, and jealous Qetsiyah used her magic to desiccate Amara before using her indestructible and eternal body as the mystical anchor to the Other Side, a new purgatory dimension of her own creation that acted as a sort of afterlife for the spirits of deceased supernatural beings.
  • Qetsiyah then magically petrified Silas as well before sealing him in a tomb in a cave on an island off of what is now Nova Scotia, Canada. Qetsiyah also created a cure for immortality, and buried it along with Silas in this tomb.
  • Qetsiyah's intention was to force Silas to have to choose between living in agony as a starving immortal for the rest of his life, or taking the cure and dying a mortal death as a witch. Regardless of which choice Silas made, he would spend eternity without Amara in the peaceful human afterlife where he believed she resided; he would either spend the rest of his immortal life as a statue on earth, or would spend it on the Other Side with Qetsiyah, the outcome she wanted most.
  • Sometime after Qetsiyah created the immortality spell, a schism formed in the magical community, and caused many witches, including the group of witches who became known as the Gemini Coven, to fear the amount of power witches like Qetsiyah possessed in order to be able to create such spells. This led to the Travelers killing Qetsiyah in anger for the trouble she had wrought to their group by essentially creating the magical basis from which all forms of immortality would be derived in the future.
  • The aforementioned witches then cursed Qetsiyah and Silas' community of witches, who from then on became known as the Travelers due to the fact that they were forced to live as nomads as a side effect of the curse, unable to settle as a community for longer than a few days or perform rituals and spells in groups without risking their homes being devastated by natural disasters such as earthquakes and plagues. This curse also cut the Travelers off from Nature, so they were unable to practice traditional magic, their preferred form of witchcraft.
  • As a result of this curse, the Travelers improvised by creating their own form of magic later known as Traveler Magic, a cruder form of their beloved traditional magic that had many more limitations. They also developed an affinity for a form of spirit possession known as Passenger spells, which allowed them to bypass the restriction in their curse that prevented them from congregating as a group by possessing the bodies of non-Travelers; this allowed them to gather and perform spells as a group with no adverse side effects.
  • The Travelers eventually came into possession of the literally-petrified Amara and spent over two thousand years constantly moving her body around so she wouldn't fall into the wrong hands. All the while, the Travelers sought Silas' location and the cure to finally destroy the immortals Qetsiyah had unknowingly created with her spell.

Consequences of the Spells on Future Generations

  • The Salvatore doppelgänger bloodline and the Petrova doppelgänger bloodline was created as a result of Silas, a very powerful witch, and Amara, a mortal, ingesting the immortality elixir, since their nigh-invulnerability caused an imbalance in Nature. Nature found a balance to the law that they had broken, which stated that every living thing must die by creating what became known as "shadow-selves," or "doppelgängers." These exact duplicates of Silas and Amara acted as a version of the immortal beings who could actually die in their place, though they could gain lesser forms of immortality by becoming vampires.
  • Silas' betrayal of Qetsiyah by sharing the immortality elixir with Amara is what caused Qetsiyah to create the Other Side to act as a purgatory for supernatural creatures. As the anchor to the Other Side, Amara was forced her to spend her immortal life frozen in stone and acting as a tollbooth for the spirits of dead supernatural beings. Whenever a supernatural being died, their spirit would pass through Amara's body on their way to the purgatory dimension, and Amara would feel the pain of each of their deaths as they crossed over. This fate ultimately drove her to psychological instability, as the immense pain caused by the spirits crossing over -- in addition to the confusion of having a foothold in two different planes of existence, which caused her to be unable to distinguish ghosts from the living became too overwhelming for her to bear over the many centuries she was alive. This dimension existed for over two thousand years, during which time it became home to the spirits of countless witches, werewolves, vampires, doppelgängers, and supernatural hunters who had died and were then forced to watch their loved ones and enemies live on without them in near-solitude until it was ultimately destroyed in 2013.

Before 5th Century A.D.[]

  • The noble Green Knight wielded Excalibur, though his body and soul was corrupted and decayed as a result of the power. He became unworthy to wield the sword and his thirst for more made him a scourge upon mankind. Wielding the sword, Camelot fell and the Dark Ages began. Eventually, Nimue, Lady of the Lake, became the sword's protector and was bound by duty to find a worthy champion and fell the Green Knight.
    • At an unknown point in time, both the Green Knight and Nimue encountered Malivore was was consumed.

5th Century A.D.[]

  • In Europe, Markos, leader of the Travelers, was born.
  • Markos, upon growing up to become a powerful Traveler witch and leader of their clan, cast a spell on the first pair of doppelgängers spawned as a result of Silas and Amara's immortality. This spell caused the two doppelgänger lines to be mystically drawn to one another so that, when the time came, it would be easier for the Travelers to find them and use their combined blood to break the curse that was placed on them by the witches.
  • In what would become the United States of America, a Native American man and woman, both powerful witches and members of two warring tribes, were married together to create a unified coven.
  • The couple then went on to conceive a child together. For nine months, the tribal Elders came to the the mother, using magic to grant the child great power in hopes that the newborn would become a symbol of prosperity.
  • After the child was born, it became clear that Inadu was even more powerful than they could have imagined. However, this power came with an insatiable hunger for more power, channeling life in all its forms. Eventually she loved the fear she inspired in others and became ruthless, unfeeling, empty, the define trait gave rise to her nickname, "The Hollow."
  • Years later, after Inadu, now a young woman, had performed numerous sacrifices in the name of taking their power for herself, the Elders of her coven, along with her own mother, used wolves to ambush Inadu so that they could take her down once and for all. Knowing that they would have to kill her via dismemberment to ensure that she would be truly dead, the witches held her down as they enchanted an axe with the power to end her life. Knowing that her time was limited, Inadu cast one final spell, empowered by her death.
  • Once she had been killed, the nature of the spell was finally revealed-- she cursed every witch present for her execution to be bound to the Full Moon, at which time they would be forced to shapeshift into wolves, the same animals they used to hunt her, thus causing the creation of the Werewolf species and curse. Inadu's mother, who bore the Crescent mark just like her daughter, then became the progenitor of the Labonair bloodline of Werewolves, who shared her lineage with Inadu.
  • The other cursed witches in attendance then became the progenitors of the remaining six original werewolf bloodlines -- Malroux, Deep Water, Barry, BasRoq, Paxon, and Poldark.
  • At some point, Inadu's spirit was locked away by the New Orleans Ancestral Witches, remaining a prisoner, in an unknown dimension, for centuries until the link between the ancestors and the living world was destroyed in 2014 and she used the massive release of energy to escape.

ca. Early 970s A.D.[]

  • In the Kingdom of Norway, a large group of Viking warriors attacked a village where two young witches, Esther and Dahlia, were raised. The Vikings easily slaughtered all of the villagers except for the two witches, whom they decided to capture after they saw Dahlia using magic to neutralize the Viking who attempted to attack her younger sister. Before they were captured, the sisters promised each other that they would stand by one another, "always and forever," no matter what happened. It was this vow that would also later be adopted by Esther's children Finn, Elijah, Niklaus, Kol, and Rebekah in the early 11th century
  • In order to spare Esther from the horrible physical and psychological abuse she herself would eventually endure from the Vikings, Dahlia agreed to perform the dark magic they demanded in exchange for Esther's protection. As a result of this deal, she was forced to work for them all day in a cramped hovel while Esther was able to spend most of her day outside collecting magical herbs for her.
  • At some point during their captivity, Esther began to grow closer to one of her Viking captors, Mikael, and after some time, they fell in love and planned to get married and start a family.
  • When Dahlia informed her of a plan she had created to allow them to escape the Vikings' control using potent sage and serpent's blood, Esther confessed that she had decided to stop practicing witchcraft, as she believed she would no longer need it because Mikael would protect her from any harm. Dahlia felt incredibly betrayed by Esther's decision to leave her in favor of marrying one of their captors, believing that she was breaking their vow to always stick together. In her grief, she began sobbing on the floor after Esther left with Mikael. It is believed that this moment is what led to Dahlia swearing to never be oppressed again.
  • Some time in 971, Mikael and Esther were married and began to try to have children of their own.

972 A.D.[]

  • In the Kingdom of Norway, a large group of Viking warriors attacked a village where two young witches, Esther and Dahlia, were raised. The Vikings easily slaughtered all of the villagers except for the two witches, whom they decided to capture after they saw Dahlia using magic to neutralize the Viking who attempted to attack her younger sister. In her grief, she began sobbing on the floor after Esther left with Mikael. It is believed that this moment is what led to Dahlia swearing to never be oppressed again.

972 A.D.[]

  • In Norway, a barren Esther Mikaelson asked her sister Dahlia to help her conceive a child with magic. Dahlia initially rejected her pleas, as she was still resentful that Esther had abandoned witchcraft and believed if she hadn't, Esther would be able to help herself, but after some convincing, she ultimately agreed. However, Dahlia warned her that it would require heavy sacrifice, which Esther was desperate enough to agree to pay.
  • A short time afterward, Mikael and Esther conceived their first child together, and within the year, their daughter, Freya, became their firstborn child.

974 A.D[]

977 A.D.[]

  • When Freya was five years old and just starting to come into her magical abilities, Dahlia sensed her power and came to take her, Esther's firstborn child, as payment for casting the fertility spell in 972. Esther attempted to resist the price of the spell, which caused Dahlia to remind Esther that she hadn't just agreed to give up her own firstborn child to her-- she had also agreed to give up the firstborn witch child of each and every one of Esther's witch descendants for as long as her bloodline existed.
  • Esther was so devastated by this event (despite knowing what she was agreeing to when she requested Dahlia cast the spell) that she vowed to return to the dark arts and grow in experience and magical strength until she was powerful enough to rival Dahlia herself. Shortly after Freya was taken, Esther made good on this threat and began practicing witchcraft again.
  • Mikael, who was away in battle at the time Freya was taken, was told a lie that Freya died from plague upon his return to their home in Norway. This news ultimately had a permanent effect on the future of his family, as the "death" of his beloved daughter caused Mikael to become withdrawn from Esther and his later children.
  • Esther was also pregnant with her third child, Elijah, when Freya was taken away by Dahlia, indicating that Elijah was born later this year or earlier in the following year.
  • Freya, now in Dahlia's possession, was immediately taught to use her powers by her new guardian. After a short period of instructing Freya in witchcraft, Dahlia created her own brand of connective magic and bound herself to young Freya in a way that allowed her to augment Freya's powers while still giving herself the ability to also channel her young niece and increase her own power as well.
  • Armed with Freya and the immense magical power they shared, Dahlia set out to use it to vanquish her enemies. She began this mission right away by slaying an entire village of Viking men, women, and children with a wave of her hand, as the village was led by a chief who wanted to run her out of the encampment for practicing witchcraft.

ca. 977 - Late 990's[]

  • The witch Ayana, Esther's friend and mentor, informed Esther of a far-away place where "everybody is healthy and blessed with the gifts of speed and strength." This place was in the New World, and the people she was describing were werewolves.
  • Esther, Mikael, their two sons, (Elijah and Finn) and Ayana (along with several other Norwegian Vikings) migrated to the place that would eventually become known as Mystic Falls, Virginia in the United States of America. They were quickly welcomed into a village in which many werewolves resided and easily integrated into their new home. During the full moon, the Viking colonists would hide inside the extensive cave system under the village to protect themselves from the werewolves while they were transformed.
  • The Mikaelson family lived in peace with the natives for over twenty years. During this time, Mikael and Esther had four more children together: Niklaus, Kol, Rebekah, and Henrik. However, it would soon be revealed that Klaus was not actually Mikael's biological son, but instead was a product of an affair Esther had with Ansel, the chief of the village and the werewolf Alpha of what eventually became known as the North East Atlantic Pack.
  • Because Klaus inherited the werewolf gene from his true father, Esther spent the rest of Klaus' human life fearing that the Viking warrior culture would cause him to kill and trigger his curse, which would subsequently reveal her infidelity. In order to keep Klaus from activating his werewolf gene for as long as possible, she cast a spell to cause physical weakness on a Starling Necklace in hopes of ensuring Klaus wouldn't have the power to kill anyone. However, it was this magically-induced weakness that caused Mikael, who valued only strength in his offspring, to begin abusing Klaus, and this abuse ultimately played a huge role in making Klaus the paranoid, vengeful, and violent person he became as an adult.
  • During this time, the lord Tristan de Martel and his younger sister, the lady Aurora de Martel were born to the Count de Martel and his wife in Marseilles, France. When Aurora was born, her mother died in childbirth, causing Aurora to blame herself for her death for the rest of her life.

ca. Late 990s-Early 1000's[]

  • In the Kingdom of Norway, Freya, now an adult woman, continued to learn witchcraft from Dahlia, and as she grew older, it became exceedingly clear that Freya's magic was out of control, as the firstborn witches of Dahlia and Esther's family's bloodline are known to always possess devastating amounts of power, moreso than the other witches of the bloodline.
  • After learning that Freya's siblings had been turned into vampires, preventing them from having any children, Dahlia, furious that Esther had essentially weaseled out of their deal by preventing her from taking their firstborn witch children, became determined to figure out a way to get the firstborn Mikaelson witches she desperately craved. Her ultimate goal was to create a coven of powerful witches from whom she could channel and become unstoppable, and it was this goal that led her to realize that she needed to extend her lifespan in order to make her plan work, since she had only Freya to continue the bloodline at this point.
  • Dahlia eventually created a spell that would grant a witch an unconventional form of immortality, which would allow them to retain their magic, unlike vampires and true immortals, who lose their magic upon transformation. Though Freya insisted that she wanted no part of this spell, as she viewed the immortality as a curse, Dahlia (seeing this opportunity as both a stop-gap in her quest to true immortality as well as a chance to extend Freya's life so she can have a larger bloodline of Mikaelson witches for Dahlia to take) forced Freya to partake in the ritual against her will. The spell required them to put themselves in a magically-induced sleep for a century while their magic would continue to grow exponentially over that time. When they awoke from this sleep, they would then have more power than they ever dreamed, but it came at a price-- they could only be active for a single year before they had to return their magical slumber for another century and once again build up more of their power. This spell ensured that they would only become more powerful with each century they awakened.

1001[]

  • At some point in this year, Tatia, a Petrova doppelgänger who was the object of affection for both Elijah and Klaus, confessed to Elijah that she loved him, effectively choosing him over his brother. The relationship between Elijah and Tatia grew stronger from then on, with Elijah's mother Esther being so happy that she truly believed that she would call Tatia her daughter once she and Elijah married.
  • In the New World, Henrik Mikaelson was killed by werewolves after sneaking out on a full moon with Klaus "to watch the men change into beasts."

Autumn 1001:

  • In their grief after losing their youngest son, Mikael and Esther began thinking of magical ways to protect their family in order to ensure that they would never suffer such a loss again. When Esther came upon the Immortality Spell that Qetsiyah created that turned Silas and Amara into the first Immortals, she got the idea to modify it to defend against the werewolves' powers. However, when she approached her mentor, Ayana, and begged her for her magical assistance, Ayana refused, stating that the balance of Nature would not stand for what she wanted to do, and insisting that if Esther proceeded as planned, she would cause the beginning of a plague.
  • After much convincing and encouragement from Mikael, Esther ultimately turned the Mikaelson Family into the first vampires using her modified immortality spell shortly after the village celebrated the pagan holiday Samhain. Esther had two reasons for transforming her husband and their children into these immortal vampires: it was both a way protect the rest of her family from losing any other members to the werewolves, and also, secretly, to keep them from bringing forth another generation of witches, since Esther knew that vampires, as undead creatures, could not have biological children, and she also knew that Dahlia intended to return to her in order to claim any firstborn children Finn, Elijah, Klaus, Kol, and Rebekah would potentially have.
  • In the spell, she used a small amount of blood that Tatia voluntarily gave her at Esther's request, as Tatia's status as the first Petrova doppelgänger to be born after Amara was made into anImmortal, made her blood a powerful binding agent in witchcraft. She also called on the sun for life and the ancient white oak tree for immortality. As a result, the very first vampires, called the Originals, were created.
  • Shortly afterward, the recently-turned Original vampires unintentionally made their first human kills, revealing that an all-consuming hunger for human blood was an unforeseen side-effect of vampirism, a hunger that the Mikaelson children had yet to learn to control. After Klaus killed his first human, he immediately began shifting into a werewolf, revealing his newly activated hybrid nature and making it known that Klaus was not Mikael's biological son, but was instead a product of the affair Esther had with Ansel, a werewolf and the Alpha of the North East Atlantic Pack, the same pack to which the werewolf who accidentally killed Henrik belonged.
  • During Klaus' first werewolf transformation after making his first human kill, he ran into the woods and accidentally slaughtered six villagers who happened to be there that night.
  • Elijah's lover, Tatia, caught him consoling Klaus the morning after his first full-moon-induced transformation and saw the victims of his bloodlust surrounding him in the woods. When Elijah saw the look of horror and disgust on Tatia's face, he chased after her to explain what had happened, and Tatia, in her fear, accidentally cut her hand open when she tripped and fell on a tree root. The scent of her blood was too overwhelming for the newly-turned Elijah, who was unable to resist his newborn vampire bloodlust and ultimately fed on her until she died.
  • Afterward, Elijah realized he had inadvertently caused the death of the woman he loved and became so desperate that he brought Tatia's body to his mother in order to seek her help. Esther felt guilty for the fact that Elijah had made his first human kill as a result of the fact that she turned him into a vampire and knew that Elijah was devastated by the fact that he murdered the love of his life. So, she magically altered his memories so he would not have to suffer for what he had done. The spell she cast created a door in his mind behind which the memories of Tatia's death were stored, and because Elijah lost his memories of the event, he (and the rest of his siblings) mistakenly believed that Esther had killed Tatia in order to use her blood to bind the Hybrid Curse, an incorrect assumption that Esther encouraged in order to hide the truth.
  • However, an unforeseen consequence of the spell cast on Elijah's memories was that it created the "red door" behind which Elijah would later begin store each and every memory of all of his violent actions over the course of his thousand-year-long life.
  • Mikael was furious at his wife's betrayal, and the Spirits were intent to restore the balance of Nature that had been disturbed when Klaus' hybrid nature made him nearly invulnerable. So, in order to make up for her mistakes, Esther cast a curse on Klaus using the remaining doppelgänger blood left in Tatia's deceased body as a binding agent, which then bound his werewolf heritage and essentially made the majority of his werewolf powers dormant.
  • Upon learning that Klaus' biological father was the chief of the werewolf pack whose member killed his son Henrik, Mikael went into an intense rage and killed at least half of their village, including Ansel and the majority of his pack. This act would ultimately ignite a war between the two species that still rages on in the present day, though enough members of Ansel's family survived for his bloodline to survive into the 21st century.
  • Klaus, feeling betrayed by his mother for her lies, strangled Esther to death and blamed Mikael for the act, causing his siblings to turn their backs on their father out of anger.
  • After Niklaus, Elijah and Rebekah fled the family home following Esther's death to escape their father, Mikael, Elijah and Rebekah assured Klaus that they were not going to desert him, and the three of them swore an oath to stay together "Always and Forever," a phrase that would bind the three of them together as siblings for eternity. Soon afterward, the three left the village and returned to the Old World, where they reunited with their brothers Kol and Finn.

1002[]

Late Winter/Early Spring 1002:

  • Finn, Elijah, Klaus, Kol, and Rebekah, having made it back to Europe following their transformations into vampires and the death of their mother, eventually ended up in southern France after spending the the last half-year (autumn and winter of 1001 AD) running from Mikael. Elijah insisted that they do everything in their power to not draw attention to themselves out of fear their father would find them, and enacted several rules by which the five of them would abide to ensure their success, which included feeding discretely, covering their tracks, and killing anyone who learned the truth about what they were so they could not spread rumor of the existence of vampires.
  • The five Mikaelson siblings had numerous arguments about their new lifestyle and what they should do next. Kol thought it would be best if they split up, since Mikael couldn't go after all of them at once, and though Finn wasn't keen on separating, he and Rebekah yearned for ordinary lives that they couldn't live on the run, but Elijah and Klaus eventually ruled to stay together, as they had made a vow to be a family, always and forever.
  • After the siblings had fed on and killed four noblemen and one noblewoman who appeared to be heading toward the castle not far from where they were, Rebekah had the idea to take their clothes and carriage and go to the castle in their victims' place. The five of them were divided on the subject, especially considering they were in a strange new country whose customs and culture they did not understand.
  • While they were debating, Elijah found the servant of their deceased victims, a man named Lucien Castle who was so terrified after witnessing them slaughtering the guests he was meant to deliver that he begged them to allow him to help them blend into the French court by teaching them their customs in exchange for sparing his life. Though Elijah reminded them that they had a rule to kill anyone who found out they were vampires, he was eventually overruled, and the Mikaelsons decided to do as Lucien requested and allow him to live so he could tell them everything they needed to know to pass for the children of the French Count de Guise at the castle.
  • The Mikaelsons and Lucien soon arrived at the castle wearing their victims' clothes, where Lucien instructed them on how to introduce themselves to Count de Martel and how to appear to be wealthy nobles rather than the scared immigrants that they were. Lucien then introduced them to the Count. Though they were nearly exposed as frauds when Count de Martel claimed the Count de Guise had never mentioned children, Elijah, Klaus and Rebekah managed to talk their way out of it and were invited to stay in their home.
  • While at the celebration, Lucien and Klaus talked privately, during which time Lucien admitted that his master, Count de Martel, treated him cruelly, and that even knowing that Klaus and his siblings were vampires, Lucien believed the Count and the nobles were even greater monsters than they are. Lucien then stated that he'd be happy to see them all dead, which seemed to endear him to Klaus. When Tristan and Aurora de Martel arrived and joined the party, Klaus seemed immediately smitten with Aurora and asked Lucien about them. Lucien explained that they were the Count's children and warned him it would likely be best to stay away from them, describing Tristan as being "wicked" and alluding to the fact that he had romantic feelings for Aurora as well.
  • Some time later, the Mikaelsons had thoroughly assimilated into their new lives at the Court of Marseilles. During a celebration in the castle yard, Lucien approached Klaus with a letter for Aurora and begged him to give it to her, as the two had shared romantic feelings for each other since childhood but Lucien was unable to declare his intentions due to his low station. Klaus, who, unbeknowst to anyone, was engaging in an affair with Aurora himself, was torn between helping his friend and maintaining his new life, so he ultimately agreed to give Aurora the letter, but then later lied and claimed that Aurora refused to accept it.
  • Lucien, still a determined romantic, went to Aurora's room to speak with her and found Klaus and Aurora together, leaving him devastated. Tristan's guards, having seen Lucien enter Aurora's chambers, approached the room, and though Klaus was able to get away at Aurora's urging, Lucien didn't move quickly enough and was caught by Tristan.
    • Tristan, furious at Lucien, ordered his guards to take him to the cellar, where he later whipped the servant until his back was raw and bloody. Klaus and Elijah confronted Tristan and attempted to stop him, but Tristan revealed that he knew what they were, as he had spoken to a woman who had escaped with her life after Kol had attacked and fed on her village. Klaus was about to torture Tristan, but when he revealed that he had arranged for his fastest riders to spread news of the Mikaelsons being frauds and demons, Elijah forced him to stand down. Afterward, Tristan insisted that they were all the same and were simply trying to protect their families before he sliced Lucien's mouth open from ear to ear.
    • Once Tristan left, Klaus tried to feed Lucien water to help soothe his wounds, but it only hurt him more. When Klaus hugged him and apologized for what happened, Lucien angrily stabbed him in the stomach with Tristan's knife, not knowing that it would do him no harm. Upon contact with Klaus' blood, Lucien's wounds began to heal, surprising both men, as the Original vampires were not aware of this aspect of their powers. Lucien, believing that he had become the same creature as Klaus, fled to attack Tristan, only to be killed before he could even harm him. Believing him to be truly dead, Klaus and Elijah prepared a traditional Viking funeral for Lucien and sadly discussed how confusing it was that their blood could heal the living but not the dead. Just before Klaus could set fire to Lucien's funeral pyre, Lucien awoke in transition, once again shocking them both. Shortly afterward, Lucien fed on the blood of one of the members of the court, completing his transition and becoming the first vampire to ever be sired by one of the Originals. He then begged Klaus to teach him to be what they are, and Klaus eventually agreed. Elijah would later say that Lucien brought out Klaus' bad side, but Klaus would insist that they brought out the worst in each other.
  • After Lucien's transformation, he continued to feed alongside the rest of the Mikaelsons during their stay at the Court de Martel.
  • Klaus and Aurora continued to carry on their relationship in secret, during which time Aurora asked him on numerous occasions to turn her into a vampire like him so no one could keep them apart. Klaus, not wanting to damn her to his fate, refused.
    • On her birthday, Klaus found her crying in her room, and after some coaxing, Aurora admitted that her birthday wasn't a time of celebration because she had killed her mother in childbirth, and as a result, she was broken and cursed. Klaus, feeling badly for her, tried to make her feel better by confessing that he had killed his mother and blamed it on his father after she turned him and his siblings into vampires, and assured her that she was not as cursed as he was. Aurora believed this was proof that they were the same and begged him to turn her, but he refused once again. Finally, Aurora became so desperate that she slit her own wrists in her bed in an attempt to take her own life. Rebekah ultimately found her and fed her her own vampire blood to heal her, and after Rebekah echoed Klaus' earlier sentiments regarding not wanting to curse anyone to their life, Aurora sadly asked her to leave so she could sleep. Once she was gone, Aurora jumped out of her window, killing herself and turning herself into Rebekah's first vampire progeny.
    • After Aurora finished her transition, she met with Klaus, who was horrified at first, but then eventually made love to her, and both of them with thrilled to be in a relationship where they were both as powerful, strong, and cursed as the other.
  • Shortly afterward, news began to spread through the nearby village of demons who feed on blood, and Finn became furious that Klaus and Kol's antics, along with those of Lucien and now Aurora, have caused word to spread of them. Realizing that their father Mikael was coming for them, Elijah decided that they needed to flee.
    • Aurora ran into Elijah as he was packing to leave, and when he told her they had to flee, Aurora stated that she would come with them. Elijah immediately rejected her, stating that Mikael's curse was theirs and theirs alone, and that Aurora wasn't their blood. Aurora, so angry about being left behind, stated that blood didn't matter since she knew things about Klaus that none of his family did. Elijah became furious at this remark and unconsiously compelled her to tell him what she knew, forcing her to confess that Klaus had killed their mother, blamed in on their father, and lied about it to his siblings to prevent them from abandoning him. Elijah was so upset about this confession that he then once again used compulsion to make Aurora find Klaus wretched and cruel in punishment for what he had done.
    • When Klaus came to Aurora to ask her to run away with him, Aurora was unable to accept, and instead told him that while she thought she loved him, she has suddenly seen him clearly and realized that he was pathetic, cruel, and not deserving of her. Klaus began to cry and told her she was breaking his heart, but Aurora was unable to take back what she had said.
  • Before the Mikaelsons fled the Court of Marseilles, Elijah personally sired his own first vampire, Tristan de Martel. Then, having begun to understand how vampire compulsion works, Elijah compelled Lucien, Aurora, and Tristan to believe that they were Klaus, Rebekah, and himself before then compelling them to flee France, effectively making them bait for Mikael, who was on their way to hunt them down. This compulsion would hold for over a hundred years until the real Mikaelsons were daggered in the 12th century, effectively breaking the mind control Elijah had used on them. Despite Mikael's best efforts, Lucien, Aurora and Tristan were able to evade him for the entirety of their lives as they traveled across Europe.
    • Once the Mikaelsons' progeny had fled the court, the five Mikaelsons traveled south to Tuscany, Italy, staying in the country for an unknown period of time.

ca. 1000s[]

  • Around a millennia ago, in certain parts of the world, there were monsters. In one region, there was no monster more terrifying than dragons. On their own, no faction was any match for dragons, thus, an unholy alliance was formed between a witch, a werewolf and a vampire. The "Triad" combined their blood, and the witch using black magic, created a golem capable of consuming the dragons. They spelled the creature to have an insatiable hunger, but their spell also made it unable to harm witches, werewolves, or vampires. They named it "Eater of the Dark", Malivore. When the dragons, in human form, returned to collect the treasure from all the villages they had attacked, it was waiting for them. It took them, consumed them. To their surprise, the creature was more effective than they could have dreamed. After the dragons were gone, it kept eating every monster it could, swallowing them into an endless space inside itself.

ca. 1100s[]

  • Finn began a relationship with Sage. His family did not approve of this relationship, so they met in secret. Finn later turned Sage so that both could be together forever.

1110[]

  • The Five, a group of vampire hunters, were created by an unnamed dying witch who was descended from Qetsiyah. The Brotherhood were then magically blessed with superhuman strength, agility, and combat skills, and the spell that created them also gave them tattoos that covered their arms and chest. According to Alexander, these tattoos were meant to create a map that would lead them to an ultimate weapon that no vampire could fight against. Whether he knew the truth about this weapon or was simply misinformed about the quantity of it is still unknown.
  • At some point in this century, Elijah Mikaelson met Aya, a highly intelligent outcast. The two eventually began a romantic relationship, and Elijah sired her and turned her into a vampire. They then began to create an organization to help usher in an era of greater intellectual enlightenment that eventually became known as the Strix.

1114[]

  • Elijah, Klaus, and Rebekah, Finn, and Kol, after over a century of living as nobles in Europe, continued to live in Italy, where they followed the Normans farther south into the country during their conquests.
  • Elijah warned Klaus that he and Kol were causing the story of the Original vampires to spread across the lands due to their indiscriminate feeding, killing, and turning of humans into vampires after learning the full extent of their vampire abilities over the decades. He feared that this behavior would attract Mikael's attention and draw him to them.
  • The Brotherhood of the Five hunter Alexander met Rebekah, Elijah, and Niklaus when he and his brothers arrived in Italy. The Mikaelsons pretended to be mortals and learned from Alexander the mission of his order, believing that their status as daywalkers, thanks to their daylight rings, would keep the hunters from realizing that they were Original vampires.
  • While Alexander and Rebekah were being intimate, he revealed he possessed silver daggers that could be used to neutralize a "special kind of vampire." Before Rebekah could react to this revelation, Alexander grabbed one of the daggers and drove it into Rebekah's heart, confirming that he had figured out Rebekah was not human as she had claimed.
  • The rest of Alexander's brothers, who were having a sleepover with Finn, Elijah, Klaus, and Kol, used their own silver daggers to incapacitate the rest of the Mikaelson siblings.
  • Unbeknownst at the time, the temporary "death" experienced by the Mikaelsons while they were daggered caused the compulsion that Elijah had used to convince Lucien, Aurora, and Tristan that they were Klaus, Rebekah, and himself (with the intention of tricking Mikael into hunting them instead) to break. For the first time in over a century, Lucien, Aurora and Tristan remembered their true identities and realized they had been living a lie for decades and had lost everything in their old lives as a result of it. This revelation caused the three of them to begin to formulate plans to find a way to kill Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah in retribution for what they had done to them.
  • Klaus-- who, unbeknownst to the Brotherhood, was immune to the dagger's effects due to his werewolf heritage-- killed Alexander and the rest of his brothers in retribution for their attack. It was then revealed that at some point prior to the five of them being daggered, Alexander told Rebekah of a cure to immortality, a secret that no one else had known until this point.
    • The Five were incorrectly believed by the Mikaelsons to have become extinct following the deaths of the order's original members. However, the Five's legacy was eventually passed down to other potential hunters, although the methods for which these "potentials" are chosen remains unknown. The subsequent generations of these supernaturally-enhanced hunters also differed from their predecessors in that their Hunter's Marks did not appear on their bodies right away; instead, it began with a modified version of the vegevesr rune on their right hand that would then grow piecemeal with each vampire the hunter killed, causing the tattoo to make its way up their right arm, across the hunter's shoulders and chest, and down the other arm. These marks also could not be seen by anyone other than other members of the Five and their unactivated "potentials" until it was fully completed by one of the hunters, after which point it would magically complete itself on the four other hunters, regardless of whether or not they had killed enough vampires to reveal the full tattoo by this point.
  • After his death, Alexander's body was buried along with his sword by his former lover, Rebekah, in the church where they planned to be married.
  • Shortly after killing the entire first generation of the Brotherhood of the Five, Klaus became the first vampire to learn the consequences of killing one of the order's hunters-- if a hunter dies at a vampire's hands, they become infected with the the Hunter's Curse, a way for the hunter to fulfill their duty one last time, even in death, by driving the vampire to kill themselves. In Klaus' case, he was plagued by relentless upsetting hallucinations that drove him to the brink of suicide. However, because he was immortal, he was unable to kill himself even if he had truly wanted to, due to the relative unavailability of white oak wood in this location. These hallucinations persisted for the next 52 years until finally, at least one (and possibly as many as five) of the potential hunters of the Five finally activated their legacy by killing a vampire, thereby replacing the original hunter(s) Klaus had killed. The effects of this curse were so powerful that even Klaus described the 52 years he suffered from it as the only point in his millennium-long immortal life that he had ever truly felt aware of the passage of time.
  • After Klaus removed the silver daggers from the bodies of Elijah, Kol, and Rebekah, he decided to leave Finn daggered as a result his older half-brother's attitude toward him. From then on, Finn remained dormant in a coffin over nine centuries until he was finally undaggered by Elijah and Damon Salvatore in 2010.

Late 1166/Early 1167[]

  • At least one (and possibly as many as five) of the potential members of The Brotherhood of the Five activated their legacies by killing a vampire, causing them to become the official second generation of the order's vampire hunters. By activating their supernaturally-enhanced hunter status, they broke the Hunter's Curse that had plagued Klaus since he killed the Five's original members 52 years earlier.

ca. 1200's[]

  • Shen Min was sired by an unknown vampire from Elijah Mikaelson's sireline in the early 1200's, during or after his time spent working as Genghis Khan's torture consultant.
  • Elijah and Klaus forged several documents based on the writings of several different cultures about the "Curse of the Sun and the Moon," a fake curse of their own creation. They then planted the forgeries across the continents in an effort to motivate vampires and werewolves across the world to search for the ingredients Klaus needed to break his Hybrid Curse (namely, the moonstone and a human Petrova doppelgänger) under the mistaken impression that finding the ingredients would allow them to allow them to walk in the sun or control their wolf transformations. Elijah believed that the Aztec drawings were Klaus' best work out of all of the various forgeries he created for this purpose.

14th Century[]

  • In France, two warlocks attempt to locate and steal an ancient, supernatural knife. A knife said to be capable of saving or bringing about the end of the world. In response, its guardian, a gargoyle name Petrotho, awoke from its slumber and killed them.
  • Kurutta spent months chasing a Oni that possessed people through touch. When it possessed a child, he took the demon within himself to spare the child's life and vowed to never touch another person since he couldn't kill himself to destroy the demon.

1308[]

Mutsu Province, Japan, Kurutta encounters Malivore and is subsequently consumed.

1359[]

  • Elijah wrote in his journal that he had begun to notice that Rebekah and Klaus were slowly losing their humanity. He vowed that it was his duty as their eldest brother to ensure they stayed on the right path.

1400's[]

  • In the early 1400s, Freya and Dahlia awoke from their century-long sleep, a requirement of their unconventional immortality. Shortly afterward, Freya met and fell in love with a man named Matthias, whom she cared for so deeply that she broke the rule she had vowed to keep since she had learned of her fate as a firstborn witch of Esther's bloodline-- that she would never have children of her own out of fear that they would grow up as slaves to Dahlia just as she did. Matthias, who wanted his firstborn child to be free as well, attempted to help the then-pregnant Freya escape from her tyrannical aunt's home, but when Dahlia realized what they had done, she cast a death hex on Matthias that instantly killed him while Freya was forced to watch in horror.
  • Deeply in grief, Freya attempted to kill herself and her child by drinking a bottle of Dahlia's strongest poison, hoping to free them both from the agony of Dahlia's tyranny. However, much to her horror, she discovered upon waking that part of the immortality ritual Dahlia cast centuries earlier involved a powerful protection spell that prevented her and Dahlia from being killed by any conventional means. Unfortunately, as the spell did not extend to the child in Freya's womb, her unborn son was killed by the poison, devastating Freya so much that she believed herself to be a monster.
  • Dahlia was furious with Freya for killing her first child, as she believed he was owed to her own due as per her deal with Esther. However, she passive-aggressively comforted Freya and stated that she would forgive her... eventually.
  • Sometime during the 15th century, vampire Sebastian is born and turned into a vampire.

1450[]

1473[]

1490[]

  • Katerina Petrova gave birth to a baby girl, whom she conceived with an unnamed man. Katerina's father gave the child away to a fellow Traveler family as soon as she was born, and the child's existence was kept secret. Afterward, Katerina was then disowned and exiled from Bulgaria by her parents for the shame she caused her family by having a child out of wedlock.

1492[]

  • In the first two years after Katerina's banishment from Bulgaria, she eventually ended up in England and quickly assimilated into the culture there.
  • March/April 1492: Elijah and Niklaus, who were then nobleman in England, met Katerina Petrova through their associate Trevor in March/April of that year. Both brothers were taken by her startling resemblance to Tatia and realized that she was a doppelgänger. She became romantically involved with Klaus-- though Elijah, too, seemed to be harboring secret romantic feelings for her-- while she stayed with the two brothers and their sister Rebekah at their castle.
  • April 6, 1492: Katerina learned that Klaus was planning to sacrifice her to break his hybrid curse, and fled from him with help from Trevor, who led the Mikaelson brothers astray before instructing Katerina to run east to a cottage. When she finally arrived there, she was greeted by an old woman who lived there with Trevor's friend and fellow vampire Rose-Marie.
    • When Rose heard Katerina mention Trevor, she reluctantly allowed her to come in. Katerina explained that she had just fled from Klaus, and added that she stole the moonstone from him as proof that she was who she claimed to be. However, this news only caused Rose to become more frightened, and she refused to help, fearing Klaus' retribution against her if he learned that she had aided in Katerina's escape. She then told Katerina that she would be taken back to Klaus once the sun had set.
    • While they waited for Trevor to return, Katerina tricked Rose into feeding her vampire blood by stabbing herself with a knife, and then later hanged herself while Rose and Trevor argued about what they were going to do with her. As a vampire, Katerina's blood was not viable in the ritual to break the curse, and with her new vampire powers, she was able to run from everyone who was chasing her, leaving Rose and Trevor behind.
  • Since Rose and Trevor had aided in Katerina's transformation into a vampire despite Rose's best intentions to return her to Klaus, Rose and Trevor were forced to go on the run from him as well shortly afterward. Rose, Trevor and Katerina would successfully allude capture by the Originals for the next 500 years.
  • Months later, Katerina returned to her home in Bulgaria, only to find that her entire family and everyone who worked on their land had been viciously slaughtered by Klaus in punishment for her betrayal.

1498[]

  • Katerina once again returned to Bulgaria after being on the run for six years and searched through every village and cottage in the country for her daughter, who had been adopted immediately after her birth. It was later revealed that her daughter was Nadia Petrova, who spent her entire adult life searching for her mother.

ca. 1500's[]

  • Sometime during this century, the Mikaelson siblings all lived together in Copenhagen, Denmark, according to Freya Mikaelson.
  • Julian, who would eventually become Lillian Salvatore's lover, was born in Europe early in this century. Several decades later, he was turned into a vampire.
  • Sofya Voronova attended her sister's wedding in the village of Kalach, Russia. She had left to go inside her family's home to get more wine when she returned to the gathering to find Niklaus Mikaelson feeding on her sister after having killed the rest of the guests. She managed to survive by hiding. Since then, she has held an immense hatred for Klaus and wants revenge. It is assumed that she became a vampire at some point after this event.

1520[]

  • Early in the year, Nadia Petrova convinced an unknown vampire to turn her in order to make it easier for her to continue her search for her mother, Katerina. This search then ended up taking her to Northern Europe.

ca. 1585–1590[]

  • Sebastian, an Old World vampire, feeds on the settlers of Roanoke but feel in love with the powerful witch, Cassandra, who returned his affections. The colony leadership asked Cassandra to find the monster that was that was terrorizing them, but due to her love for him, summoned something even worse. A croatoan - something that would ferret out the lies that the Puritan hypocrites were concealing from the rest of the village. When Sebastian found out what Cassandra was plotting, he tried to stop her because she was keeping his secret and feared that she'd become a target. To further keep Sebastian safe, she desiccated him. In that state, he watched the croatoan tear her limb from limb before she could dispel it. Unable to help her as she died.
  • Sebastian remained desiccated with her token for the next several hundred years.

1659[]

1680[]

1692[]

  • The ancestors of the Bennett family fled Salem, Massachusetts to escape the Witch Trials.

1694[]

  • After an unknown woman accused Rebekah of witchcraft, Klaus subsequently turned her husband and compelled him to drain her dry.

1702[]

  • Mikael tracked his children to where they had settled in Cádiz, Spain. After he killed Klaus' horse, Theo, stuck the horse's head on a pike in the town square, and burned down half the city, Elijah and Klaus left Cadiz on horseback to find Kol and tell him they were going to leave the country.
  • When Kol refused to flee with them, Klaus and Elijah daggered him, put him in his coffin, and joined Rebekah and the still-daggered Finn on a ship bound for the New World. Kol would not be reawakened for over a century.

Between 1702 and 1718[]

  • Klaus, Rebekah and Elijah, along with the daggered Kol and Finn arrived at the port in the newly-christened penal colony known as New Orleans, Louisiana in the New World.

1718[]

  • Klaus and his siblings began to help to build the city of New Orleans.

1720[]

  • Nadia's search for her mother Katerina Petrova brought her to France, where she had heard rumor that she had been seen killing a man outside the Palace of Versailles. She found the man who spread the rumor and gave him a sack full of gold in exchange for the truth about what he saw and any additional information that could potentially lead to Katerina's whereabouts.

1745[]

1776[]

  • April 12: Willoughby was founded.

1790[]

  • Ethan Maxwell crafts the Mystic Falls Founders Bell and the Bennett Coven imbues it with magic to drive monsters from their lands.
  • One hundred witches were gathered and burned in the place now known as the witch burial ground in Mystic Falls, Virginia.
  • The violence of their deaths marked the spot on the earth with mystical energy that can be channeled by a witch who casts a spell to harness it, though only so much of the power can be wielded at one time without putting the witch channeling the magic at risk of dying from overuse of their power.
  • Sybil and Seline are lured into the Vault by Beatrice Bennett and Ethan Maxwell, where the former entraps them with a spell.
  • June 21: The weapon arrives at the Armory, sent from Mystic Falls for safekeeping.

ca. 1790[]

ca. 1800s[]

  • A group of Celtic Druids migrated to what became known as Mystic Falls, Virginia.
  • Melinda Brown was born.

1810[]

  • Marcel Gerard was born to the then-Governor of New Orleans and one of his slaves. Marcel's mother elected not to name him until he turned ten years old to ensure that he would survive the influenza outbreak that had spread through the area. However, Marcel's mother ended up dying of the fever herself before he reached that age.
  • October 9: Giuseppe Salvatore was born in presumably the United States.

1820[]

  • Elijah, Klaus, and Rebekah were residing at the Governor of Lousiana's mansion as part of a deal they made. As per their arrangement, the Mikaelson siblings would be given a residence and their feeding habits would be overlooked by the city's leaders in exchange for the three paying him off with large sums of gold.
  • Rebekah, who was in a long-term relationship with the Governor's eldest son Emil, became so enamored with him that she asked Klaus and Elijah for permission to turn him so that they could live together forever. However, Elijah rejected this proposal on the grounds that turning the Governor's "only son" (though the Governor actually did have a second, though illegitimate, son in Marcel) would make him an enemy and would thus cause the family too much trouble. When Klaus made a rude comment about Rebekah wanting to turn every single person with whom she had ever fell in love, Emil became so offended on her behalf that he attempted to fight him for Rebekah's honor. Because Emil was only a human, this fight ultimately ended in Emil's death at Klaus' hands after Klaus tossed him over the balcony at the party.
  • Days later, at Emil's funeral, Klaus saw young Marcel, who had been caught eating an apple from the plantation's apple trees and was whipped by one of the slave masters as punishment. Klaus was so impressed to see Marcel fight back against the man that he saved Marcel from more harm by killing the slave master where he stood. Having realized that the two were kindred spirits due to Marcel also being a "bastard son" of a wealthy landowner, Klaus decided to adopt the boy into the Mikaelson family as his ward. When he learned the child did not have a name, he suggested the name "Marcellus," since it's meaning, "little warrior," seemed to fit his personality.
  • February 27: Lillian Salvatore was born in presumably the United States.
  • Melinda Brown died.

1821[]

  • Elijah began to take Klaus' young ward, Marcellus Gerard, under his wing and began schooling him in literature, music, and art. During Elijah's time as his tutor, the two became very close, and Marcel began to look up to Elijah as a mentor, even saying that he wanted to play piano as well as he does.
  • Klaus, jealous of Elijah's budding friendship with Marcel, decided he needed someone with whom he could have some fun, so he undaggered Kol for the first time since 1702 and went on a feeding frenzy with him, during which the two brothers killed at least sixty residents of a tenement building.
  • Only days afterward, Klaus daggered Kol again after Kol proved to be a bad influence on Marcel by slaughtering several compelled humans in front of the young boy and feeding him his blood in preparation to turn him into a vampire, despite the fact that the boy was only eleven years old at this time. Kol would not be undaggered again for almost a century.
  • On Marcel's eleventh birthday, Klaus gifted him with the Starling Necklace that his mother Esther had given him as a child, not knowing that she had placed a spell on it to cause physical weakness in the wearer.
  • After Klaus falsely accused the New Orleans witches of killing locals in order to fuel their dark magic with the intention of covering up his own murders, Elijah's lover Céleste Dubois was drowned to death in her bathtub by the townsfolk as punishment. However, unbeknownst to anyone, Céleste used her magic to live on for the next two centuries by taking over the bodies of young female witches in the French Quarter Coven using spirit possession spells.

1835[]

  • Klaus daggered Rebekah when she went against his orders and attempted to pursue a relationship with Marcel.
  • Klaus gave Marcel the choice of either undaggering Rebekah and living out the rest of his human life with her, or being turned into a vampire by him. Marcel chose the latter, which resulted in Rebekah remaining daggered for the next 52 years.

1839[]

1842[]

  • In Saint Malo, Louisiana, Vicente Cruz, a member of the Brotherhood of the Five, traced his Hunter's Mark so that his daughter Rayna could see it for herself. When she asked him when she got her own, he told her that he hoped she never would, because if he had his way, there would be no more vampires. He then began to train Rayna so that she could defend herself, giving her the Phoenix Sword affixed with the Phoenix Stone to use as a weapon, though it did not yet possess the power it would eventually gain.

1846[]

1851[]

  • November 28: Stefan and Damon celebrated Thanksgiving in the Salvatore Estate with their parents, Giuseppe and Lily Salvatore, when they were age five and twelve, respectively.
  • Giuseppe made Damon behead his pet turkey, Sami, so that they could eat her for Thanksgiving dinner. Damon initially refused to eat his pet turkey, but when Giuseppe threatens to lock him in the cellar without supper for the rest of the evening, he is forced to reluctantly eat the meal anyway.
  • Lily stole money from Giuseppe's bureau so that she could buy train tickets to escape her abusive husband with her sons, since she had no money of her own, nor any other resources she could use to leave him. However, Giuseppe noticed the stolen money, and he purposely sent Lily to go make him a drink before confronting Damon about it, believing him to have been the thief. Damon insisted that he didn't take it at first, but when he began to worry that Giuseppe would harm Stefan, Damon falsely admitted to taking the money, and his father burned Damon's hand with a lit cigar as both a punishment for lying and stealing and as a deterrent for future misbehavior. Lily noticed later that Giuseppe had harmed Damon, but she said nothing out of fear of what Giuseppe would do.
  • In the night, Lily went to the library to sneak away the train tickets she had hidden in a book, but began to panic when she couldn't find them. Giuseppe then appeared behind her and held up the tickets that he had found. Lily tried to lie and say that she bought the tickets as a surprise for him and the boys, but Giuseppe knew what she was really planning to do and beat Lily out of drunken anger, promising to take the boys from her for good if she tried anything like this again.
  • That night, Giuseppe found her tending to her wounds in their bedroom and apologized for his behavior, though he also stated that he couldn't be blamed for wanting to do whatever he had to in order to keep his family together. Lily, having seen Giuseppe's true colors, pretended to accept his apology and forgive him, but secretly harbored deep resentment toward him for thwarting her plans.

1857[]

  • Julian came to Vicente and Rayna Cruz's village, where he slayed dozens of their fellow people before attempting to kill Vicente. Just as he was about to drain him of his blood, Rayna appeared and stopped him, informing him that he was a member of the Brotherhood of the Five and that if Julian killed him, he would be afflicted with the Hunter's Curse. To get around this obstacle, Julian compelled Rayna to kill her father for him, and though she tried her best to resist it, she was unable to do so. Before she gave him the killing blow, he told her to know that it wasn't her fault, and to remember what he taught her so she could continue his legacy.
  • Some time later, the shamans of Rayna's village performed a ritual to empower her to become the Huntress and avenge the deaths of their people. They had her drink the Tea of Protection, which imbued her with great strength and power, as well as an immunity to witch magic. They then began to kill themselves one by one, giving up their individual lives so that Rayna could be reborn like a Phoenix and have many lives to slay vampires. The surviving shaman then linked Rayna's spirit to her sword, which would thirst for the blood of vampires and aid her in her mission, before he killed himself as well.

1858[]

  • Lily Salvatore contracted tuberculosis (then known as "consumption"), a disease that caused her much suffering. After her health had taken a turn, her husband Giuseppe Salvatore sent their youngest son Stefan to fetch cream violets in order to make an herbal tonic. However, it was later revealed that this was simply a "fool's errand" meant to make it easier for Giuseppe to send Lily to a sanatorium for hospice treatment.
  • While in the sanatorium, Lily met Valerie Tulle, a Siphoner witch who worked as a nurse there.
  • ca. May 23: When it became clear Lily was dying, Lily was fed vampire blood by another one of her nurses shortly before she passed away. She then awoke several hours later in transition to become a vampire, though whether or not her husband Giuseppe was aware of her transformation is still unclear.
    • The night before her funeral, Lily stopped to say goodbye to her sons. She first saw young Stefan and told him that everything would be all right. However, she was then overcome by her newborn-vampire bloodlust and was forced to flee before she could hurt him, leaving Stefan to believe he had simply seen his mother's angel in his dreams. She was then too afraid of hurting Damon to risk saying goodbye to him, and instead left for Europe without another word.
    • Several days later, Lily's funeral was held at the town's church, and her (empty) casket was buried in what became the Mystic Falls Cemetery. Damon, who was supposed to give a eulogy for his mother at the funeral, became too overwhelmed with grief and insecurity to write a satisfactory speech, and ended up skipping the service altogether, leaving Stefan to mourn his mother all alone until Damon finally arrived after the burial. Neither brother was aware of the existence of vampires at this time, nor did they have any idea that their mother had been transformed into one.
  • After the funeral, Lily took Valerie under her wing and left town, where the two became quite close. It was this relationship with Lily that laid the foundation for the Heretics.

1860[]

1863[]

  • Lillian Salvatore, who was in a romantic relationship with a vampire named Julian, had already begun to form her new "family" with Valerie Tulle and Oscar, both of whom were Siphoner witches who had been exiled by the Gemini Coven once their true nature was revealed.
  • Early-Mid June:
    • Stefan Salvatore met Valerie and Julian at the County Fair after Lily sent them to make sure Stefan was doing well before they left for Europe. Despite Lily's instructions to simply observe him and not interact with him, Valerie introduced herself to Stefan, and the two quickly became smitten with each other. Julian attempted to separate them early on, but Valerie used her magical amulet to cast a cloaking spell so they wouldn't be seen.
      • Stefan ultimately lost his virginity to Valerie that night, though he was not aware that they had conceived a child during their lovemaking. Julian eventually caught them afterward and forced Valerie to leave with him, but before she left, she assured Stefan that she would find her way back to him.
    • At some point between Valerie leaving and Oscar coming to see Damon in Gettysburg, Damon received a letter from Stefan, who was a deep depression due to Giuseppe's drinking and losing Valerie. Damon was so worried about him that he begged his Colonel for two weeks leave to go home and check on him. The Colonel initially refused, but later relented when Damon offered to do anything to get it, telling Damon that he could get his leave if he helped him by capturing and bringing back some Confederate deserters who were being housed by Union sympathizers at a farmhouse several miles away. Damon agreed, and took his fellow comrade Henry Wattles with him to help.
      • However, when they arrived there, the Confederate deserters threatened with guns, and in the chaos that ensued, both deserters and the women housing them were shot dead by Damon and Henry. This was the first time that Damon had ever taken innocent lives, and he and Henry decided to never speak of the disaster ever again. It was this scene that eventually was replayed in Damon's hellscape when his soul was trapped in the Phoenix Stone in 2013.
  • June 29: Oscar was sent to Gettysburg by Lily to make sure that Damon Salvatore was doing well before they left on their trip. He ended up befriending Damon, who was fighting for the Confederacy in the American Civil War, and Damon eventually admitted he thought he was fighting for the wrong side.
  • June 30: Damon, due to his conversation with Oscar the day before, deserted the Confederate forces one day before Battle of Gettysburg. Damon would later inform Oscar that it was his influence that prevented him from dying in the battle.
  • Late Summer:
    • Valerie sent Stefan a telegram asking him to run away with her, as she no longer wanted to be a part of Lily's family due to Julian's cruelty. Stefan arrived at their meeting place two hours early with a bouquet of flowers and waited for her there, only to be devastated when she didn't show up.
      • When Valerie left in the cover of night to meet Stefan, she was caught by Julian. She insisted that she was leaving regardless of what they wanted, but Julian forced her to stop. He then remarked that he frightened her before revealing that he could hear "both of her hearts" racing and asking her if Stefan knew she was pregnant with his child. Julian then severely beat Valerie nearly to the point of death, which ultimately caused her to miscarry her child, though she managed to survive the ordeal.
        • Valerie tried to use the little magic stored in her amulet to cast the Gemini Coven's spell to transfer a fetus from an endangered mother to a surrogate in hopes of saving her child, but the amulet did not possess enough magic for the spell to be successful.
      • After she lost consciousness, Julian brought her back to their home and claimed that Valerie had been robbed and beaten by a criminal, knowing that since Lily would have been furious that Valerie had an affair with her son, Valerie would never be able to expose him without exposing herself as well. Lily gave Valerie her blood to heal her, but Valerie was so devastated by the loss of her child and her future with Stefan that she drank a bottle of laudanum mixed in her tea and drowned herself in the bathtub. However, since Lily's blood was still in her system, she awakened in transition in the tub and eventually became the first known Heretic, a Siphoner-vampire hybrid.
        • After Julian learned of how powerful Valerie was as a Siphoner-vampire, he desired more Heretics for his family, and presumably convinced Oscar to turn as well shortly afterward.

1864[]

  • June:
  • Johnathan Gilbert began writing his journals about the supernatural elements of the town, particularly its significant vampire population. At the end of one of his journals, he added details about Emily Bennett and her grimoire.
    • Johnathan Gilbert was shown to be romantically interested in Pearl, an Asian woman who owned and ran the town's apothecary. However, he did not know at the time that Pearl and her daughter Annabelle were both vampires who could walk in daylight due to their daylight amulets.
  • Early-Mid September 1864: Katherine used the Atlanta Campfires as a cover as she poses as an orphaned girl who lost her parents in the fires.
    • Katherine Pierce arrived to Mystic Falls (supposedly) from Atlanta, Georgia. On her way into town, she saw Stefan Salvatore working on the side of the road and immediately became so smitten by him that she sought out Giuseppe Salvatore to ask him to allow her houseroom at the Salvatore Estate. In order to convince him to agree, she claimed that she was an orphan girl whose family died in the Atlanta Fires.
    • After some time in town, Katherine eventually revealed to Stefan and Damon that she was a vampire and began sexual relationships with both brothers; while Damon was aware that she was dallying with both of them, Stefan believed that he alone had a love affair with her. She also made friends with fellow vampires Pearl and Anna during this time, with whom she created a sizable vampire population within the town by siring many of the townsfolk.
    • Damon Salvatore, who had been fighting for the Confederacy in the American Civil War, deserted his position in the Confederate Army and returned to his home in Mystic Falls. Though he joked that he left because he was having too much fun with Stefan and Katherine to return to battle, Stefan later stated to his father that Damon deserted because he disagreed with the Confederacy's principles, a fact Damon would later confirm in 2013.
    • George Lockwood returned home from fighting in the Confederate Army with a new secret-- after having made his first human kill in battle, George triggered the Lockwood werewolf curse and subsequently began transforming into a large wolf every full moon. Knowing how the Founder's Council treated vampires, George became determined to keep his condition a secret for fear of what the Founding Families would do with the information.
    • As the Foundings Families began to catch onto their town's vampire problem, Honoria Fell brought a new elixir to Pearl's Apothecary and asked Pearl to sell it at a reduced rate. After Pearl examined the elixir, she realized that it contained vervain and brought it to the attention of Katherine, insisting that the town was becoming suspicious and suggesting that Katherine carrying on with both Salvatore brothers wasn't helping their case either.
  • September 24:
    • The First Founders' Party was held at the original Lockwood Mansion.
    • Henry informed Katherine that the recent attacks on the local residents did not seem to be the work of vampires, but rather that the victims had been mauled by something else he had never seen before now.
    • Katherine confronted George at the town's first-ever Founders' Ball and told him she knew his secret-- that he was a werewolf and had been killing the townspeople during full moons and blaming it on the vampires to avoid persecution.
    • After the ball, Stefan confessed his love for Katherine while Damon eavesdropped on them.
  • September 25: The day of the "Battle of Willow Creek."
    • On this day, the Founding Families enacted their planned round-up and mass murder of Mystic Falls' vampire population, with the intention of writing off the vampire deaths as civilian casualties in the war.
    • Stefan and his father had a conversation about vampires after Giuseppe finally admitted that they existed, not knowing that Stefan was already aware of the supernatural world. When Stefan suggested to his father that not all vampires were monsters, Giuseppe suspected that his girlfriend Katherine was a vampire and decided to spike his son's drink with vervain to test his theory.
    • After Katherine drank Stefan’s blood while they were fooling around in bed, Katherine was immediately weakened by the vervain and fell unconscious onto the floor. Giuseppe, having expected this outcome, instantly caught them and ordered Stefan to alert Sheriff William Forbes to the fact that they had captured her.
    • A desperate Damon made a bargain with Emily Bennett in which he swore to protect her descendants if she would protect Katherine from the mass killing of vampires.
    • Emily used the power of the comet that was passing overhead to cast a spell on her talisman that would protect Katherine from the planned massacre of the vampires. However, because the vampires were going to be burned in the tomb under Fell's Church, she had to protect all twenty-seven vampires believed to be inside to ensure that Katherine would be protected, too.
    • Emily used the talisman to seal the tomb underneath the church, protecting the vampires from the fire that was set to kill them. In doing so, she was forced to trap them in the tomb until the spell could be reversed with the next passing of the comet.
    • Both Stefan and Damon were killed by their own father, Giuseppe, while trying to free Katherine from a carriage that was taking her to church, not knowing that Katherine had been feeding them both her blood for weeks in case something like this happened to them.
    • Unbeknownst to the majority of the town, including Stefan and Damon, George Lockwood freed Katherine from the tomb beneath the church after making sure her name was on the list of "deceased" vampires. In exchange for her rescue and faked death, Katherine gave him the moonstone, and both of them swore to take each other's secrets to the grave.
    • Before running to her carriage, Katherine kissed Stefan's dead body and promised him that they would meet again.
  • September 26:
    • Stefan and Damon both awoke as vampires in transition at Steven's Quarry, where Emily Bennett and her brother had brought them to heal. Emily gave them the daylight rings that Katherine had instructed her to make for when they inevitably became vampires.
    • Stefan, who had decided along with his brother to not complete his transition, visited his father to say goodbye. However, Giuseppe did not understand how his son could still be alive after he had killed him, and, thinking his son was already a vampire, he tried to stake him to death. However, he inadvertently stabbed himself in the process after Stefan accidentally underestimated his own strength while he was defending himself and shoved him into a wall. Upon seeing Giuseppe's open wound, Stefan was not able to resist his new-found bloodlust, and ended up feeding on his father's blood, thus completing his transition.
    • At the end of the day, Stefan convinced Damon to drink human blood from a young girl from town in order to complete his transition as well, as he did not want to live forever without his brother. While Damon did eventually complete his transition as Stefan wanted, he was so upset that Stefan forced him into it that he vowed to bring him an eternity of misery in revenge.
    • After Damon completed his transition, Emily confessed that she had found a way to save Katherine and the other vampires in the tomb from dying in the fire, having chosen to wait until Damon had become a vampire to inform him so it wouldn't affect his decision on whether or not to turn. However, Damon chose not to share this information with Stefan, as he was still holding a grudge against him by forcing him to turn into a vampire with him.
  • Between October and December:
    • Emily Bennett, who was outed as a witch by Katherine before she fled town, was burned to death on the same spot where one hundred of her ancestors had been burned many years before.
    • Stefan fed on and killed Thomas and Honoria Fell, along with Johnathan Gilbert. However, because of his Gilbert ring, Johnathan was able to return to life, and he later identified Stefan as his killer in his journal.
    • Lexi Branson arrived to Mystic Falls after hearing that the town had a sizable vampire population, not knowing they had all supposedly burned to death in the town's round-up months earlier. She was found by newly-turned Stefan in a makeshift hospital for wounded soldiers, and upon learning she was a vampire, he took her to his home, where the two eventually became close friends.
    • As time went on, Johnathan Gilbert continued researching vampires and recording his findings and theories for future generations. In one of these journals, he listed the ways to kill an Original as such: The wood from one tree and one tree alone, an ancient white oak, would bring death to an Original vampire. When the tree burned, all hope was thought lost...But, the ash from the tree was saved, and witches forged a dagger to which the ash could be bonded. This alchemic bond provides the necessary poison. It must be brandished by humans alone, for it will bring death to all demons who wield it.

1865[]

  • Unhappy living as a vampire and disgusted by Stefan's indiscriminate feeding and killing of the townsfolk, Damon burned all the vervain in town before deciding to move away from Mystic Falls. Just before he left, he asked Lexi to keep an eye on Stefan for him, and it was his estrangement from his brother that led Stefan to finally begin to work on controlling his bloodlust with Lexi's help.

1876[]

ca. 1880[]

  • Two Siphoner outcasts from the Gemini Coven, Nora Hildegard and Mary Louise, met each other on the streets and fell in love. It was soon after that they were welcomed into Lily Salvatore's family and became Heretics, and the two have stayed in a relationship for 133 years. However, due to the stigma regarding same-sex relationships in this era, Nora and Mary Louise's relationship was kept secret to everyone except for Lily and the rest of the Heretics, who, unlike most, were very supportive of their love for one another.

ca. 1882 - 1883[]

  • Dalton St. John opened the Vault beneath the Armory, and Sybil sirened Dalton to kill his Armory subordinates. Seline used the opportunity to escape his clutches, leaving Sybil behind.

1887[]

  • Rebekah then learned that while she was daggered, Klaus gave Marcel a choice between undaggering her and spending the rest of his human life with her, or being turned into a vampire, and that he chose the latter. Rebekah was so infuriated by Marcel's betrayal that she spent the next several decades holding a grudge against him.
  • After being reawakened, Elijah took Rebekah to the city's opera theatre to celebrate her reintroduction into New Orleans society.

1891[]

  • After becoming enraged over a lady's coughing all night due to pneumonia, Klaus turned both her and her daughter into vampires, however made the daughter watch as he burned her mother alive.

ca. Late 1800s-Early 1900s[]

  • Over the course of half a century or so, the Gemini Coven exiled six of its fellow witches-- Valerie Tulle, Nora Hildegard, Mary Louise, Malcolm, Beau and Oscar-- as the coven believed that because they were Siphoners and not "true" witches who generated their own magic, they were abominations and unfit to be members of the ancient and powerful coven. Upon their exile and subsequent transformation into vampires by Lily Salvatore, the Gemini Coven henceforth referred to these witches as the Heretics.
  • Sometime after they were disowned by their coven, they met Lily Salvatore, who had become a Ripper in the years following her transformation into a vampire. According to Lily, they helped her gain control over her hunger, and the seven quickly became a self-made family. Lily then turned them into vampires, but their unique magical abilities caused an unintended side-effect: because their Siphoner nature meant that they didn't possess or generate their own magic, they fell into a loophole to the law of Nature that states that a witch, as a servant of Nature, cannot both practice magic and be an immortal vampire. Instead, they retained their ability to siphon magic from other magical beings or objects while also being given vampiric abilities. Additionally, because they, as vampires, were considered a magical being, they were also given the ability to channel the magic of their own vampirism, which could be used as an endless power source. As a result of this loophole, the Heretics became the few (if not the only) true witch-vampire hybrids on Earth.

1897[]

  • December 25: Julian killed an entire coastline in Europe on Christmas day in 1897. According to Valerie, the "event" eventually became known as the "Black Sea Massacre." Despite the excessive violence of this act, Lily's love for him remained strong; however, it did the exact opposite for Valerie, instead confirming her belief that Julian is a monster.

1901[]

  • Klaus undaggered Kol after eighty years of desiccation.
  • February 2: Mary Louise, Nora and Valerie (likely along with the rest of the Heretics) attended Queen Victoria's funeral in Windsor, United Kingdom.
  • December 31: Mary Louise and Nora (possibly along with rest of the Heretics) attended a New Year's Eve party together, which would be the last party they would attend until the 21st century.

1903[]

  • In that year, Aurora de Martel and Lucien Castle, were in Paris on a vacation.
  • At some point in this year, the vampire boyfriend of Lily Salvatore, Julian, was killed by having his soul trapped within the Phoenix Stone.
    • The Heretics then preserved his body with magic until they could reunite his spirit with his body.
    • Some time afterward, Lily came into possession of the Phoenix Stone and held onto it until she was able to resurrect her lover.
  • Fall:
    • In Southampton, England, Lily (who had the Phoenix Stone with her) and the Heretics were preparing to board a ship to New York in the hopes of resurrecting Julian and getting their revenge on the Gemini Coven.
    • Outside the shipyard, a young man named Lorenzo was suffering from a serious case of consumption/tuberculosis and became so desperate for medical attention that he bought a ticket to board the ship that was headed for New York after hearing that there was a well-known doctor on board who could help him. However, when he headed for the ship, the severity of his illness caused him to be barred from boarding the ship by one of the guards who didn't want him to infect the rest of the ship. The guard then proceeded to rip up Enzo's ticket and begin beating him until the ill man was rescued by Lily, who felt such pity for him that she killed the guard and compelled the other dockworkers to let him onto the ship to see the doctor.
    • Once aboard the ship, Lily accompanied Enzo to see the doctor, who claimed to be able to cure him with an expensive treatment. Lily assured the doctor that money was no issue, but when she sensed he was lying about the treatment's effectiveness, she compelled him to tell the truth about Enzo's condition and his proposed treatment, forcing him to confess that his "cure" was simply castor oil mixed with lavender and that he was essentially a fraud. However, the doctor then claimed that even a real treatment wouldn't be able to save Enzo and predicted that he wouldn't live longer than a week.
    • Lily immediately felt a kinship toward Enzo, as they had both been abandoned to deal with tuberculosis alone by their families, so she spent the next days at Enzo's bedside in an effort to keep him comfortable until he passed. While they talked, she explained that she, too, had died of consumption, and described how lost she felt until she met her "new family," who were also traveling with her on the ship. When it became clear that Enzo's time was running out, Lily asked Enzo to join her and her companions and promised him that by doing so, he would never be alone again. When Enzo agreed, Lily cut her wrist and dripped her vampire blood into a glass before feeding it to him. Some time later, he eventually succumbed to the tuberculosis and died.
  • late October 31/early November 1:
    • Enzo awoke later to find he was no longer ill, but quickly became overwhelmed when he looked around and saw that everyone on the ship, which had just arrived at the New York Harbor, had been seemingly slaughtered. After a moment, the charlatan doctor returned to the room, looking dazed, and informed him that everyone on the ship was dead. When Enzo asked him what had happened to Lily, the doctor says that she left, but that she told him to feed him her blood when he woke up. He then slit his own throat with a scalpel, and though Enzo was horrified by the sight of the doctor committing suicide, he was so overwhelmed by his newborn bloodlust that he rushed over to him and fed on him, completing his transition into a vampire.
    • Upon arrival in the port, Lily and her companions departed the ship before Enzo awoke in transition to enact their plan to attack the Gemini Coven. However, the coven managed to beat them to the punch, and before they could return to Enzo, Lily and the other vampires were magically trapped in a prison world for two reasons: first, to punish Lily for the approximately 3,000 people she killed overseas while she was a Ripper, and second, to protect the world from Lily's companions, the Heretics, who they believed to be aberrations of Nature because of their Siphoner abilities as well as their subsequent transformations into vampires. This suggested that the Heretics were maybe not as tame as Lily suggested to her sons earlier.
    • With Lily and the Heretics having seemingly disappeared, Enzo spent the next century believing that his sire had abandoned him.
    • The Gemini Coven then burned down the ship on which Lily, Enzo, and the Heretics arrived to America, as it was full of the passengers who had been fed on and killed by the vampires. The Phoenix Stone, which was left onboard, sank into the Atlantic Ocean with the rest of the ship, where it would not be found until decades later by scuba divers in the area. At that point, it was put on display in New York's maritime museum until 2013.

1912[]

  • Samantha Gilbert became mentally unstable, presumably from dying and being resurrected too many times by her Gilbert ring, and killed several Founding Family members, including Zachariah Salvatore. However, because the side effects of dying while wearing the ring caused blackouts when her dark alter-ego took over, she was not initially aware of her kills, and the murders of the Founding Family members remained unsolved for over a decade.
  • Damon and Stefan reunited for the first time since Damon left Mystic Falls in 1865 when they returned to their hometown to attend their nephew's funeral. Damon continued to show resentment toward Stefan for forcing him to turn and even asked Stefan if he had been the one who killed Zachariah, but Stefan was desperate to reconcile with his older brother and invited him for a drink, during which time he tried to convince him to begin feeding on animals like he had learned to do.
  • That evening, Damon met a female vampire named Sage, who was making a living by boxing human men for money. She taught Damon to enjoy the pleasures of seduction and hunting his prey, which led to Damon finally learning to embrace and enjoy his vampire nature.
  • Damon tried to share his new "discovery" with Stefan, but Stefan, who had turned to animal blood because of his addiction to human blood, was unable to control his bloodlust and accidentally ripped the head off of the woman on whom he was feeding, killing her instantly. This led Stefan and Damon to have another fight, and Stefan relapsed back into "Ripper" mode after he left town.
  • The Wickery Bridge has been built.

1914[]

  • A supernatural war began to brew in New Orleans. The witch community split into two factions: those who sided with Niklaus Mikaelson, and those who sided with Kol Mikaelson.
    • In this war against his brother, Kol sought help from the witches Astrid Malchance and Mary-Alice Claire in order to create a multitude of dark objects using the Arabian form of dark magic known as Kemiya, since his vampirism prevented him from performing the magic he needed himself. The dark objects they created include the Devil's Star, the Rosary of Madness, the cursed shackles, and the Bracelet of Obedience, all of which were meant to be used as magical practice to prepare the witches for their final spell, which would allow them to create a version of the silver daggers that would successfully neutralize his brother Klaus.
  • December:
    • Kol went to St. Anne's Church and attacked the Dowager Fauline with the Devil's Star after he had learned that she possessed an extremely large and perfect paragon diamond which Mary-Alice and Astrid could use to fuel the spell to create their mystical dagger. Once she was dead, Kol went on to kill the rest of the parishioners who were attending mass that evening to be on the safe side.
    • A short time later, Kol, Astrid, and Mary-Alice broke into the Dowager Fauline's cottage to steal the paragon diamond for their own ends after Mary-Alice cast a boundary spell on the property to prevent anyone from coming in after them. However, as soon as Kol left the house with the diamond in hand, he was confronted by Klaus and Marcel, who had been tipped off about Kol's plans and who then forced him to give them the diamond, although they had no idea why Kol wanted or needed it. Klaus also enlisted the help of one of his witches, who turned the boundary spell Mary-Alice cast against her, which then trapped Mary-Alice and Astrid in the home for the rest of their lives.
      • Because of this powerful boundary spell, the New Orleans covens began using the home as an asylum and prison for their fellow witches who had either broken the coven's rules or who were driven to insanity by witchcraft, as the boundary spell Klaus' ally had cast ensured that no one would be able to escape the home once they were inside.
    • Freya Mikaelson met her younger siblings for the first time at the Mikaelson family Christmas party, though they did not know who she was; in fact, although Rebekah did recognize her as a witch, she mistook her for being Kol's date to the party.
    • At some point in the evening, Rebekah outed Kol's plans to make the dagger to Klaus with the French Quarter witches. Afterward, Klaus made a toast to his sister for her loyalty before he and Elijah cornered Kol on the balcony and daggered him once more in front of the entire party. Kol would once again remain daggered for almost ninety years.
    • An unknown amount of time after the Mikaelson family Christmas party, Freya (and presumably Dahlia as well) once again fell into their century-long sleep as a condition of their immortality and invulnerability. Either before or after they entered their slumber, Freya ended up inside the Fauline cottage (though how or why she ended up there is still unknown), where her unconscious body was eventually placed in a glass coffin and locked inside the cottages attic. She then remained there for the duration of her sleep, during which time the cottage became known as a makeshift asylum for the criminal and/or mentally unstable witches of the New Orleans covens.

1916[]

  • Marcel, tired of being controlled by Klaus and trying to get over Rebekah, decided to enlist in the United States Army to fight in World War I. He was then assigned to the 369th Regiment, also known as the "Harlem Hell Fighters" or the "Brotherhood of the Damned," and was deployed to Séchault, France shortly afterward despite Klaus' protests that he stay at home where he belonged.

1917[]

  • December 24: Stefan, still on a Ripper-binge five years after his last big fight with his brother in Mystic Falls, fed on and killed an entire migrant village in California. His bloodthirsty behavior led to Stefan becoming known by many vampires as "the Ripper of Monterey," an insatiable vampire who spent decades recovering from and relapsing into his addiction to human blood. Seline witnessed Stefan's murderous spree and was going to kill him in Arcadius' name. However, when she looked into his mind, she felt pity and took away Stefan's memory of the incident. Feeling Seline was weak for sparing Stefan's life, Cade's interests were peaked in Stefan and he decided that someday, he will recruit Stefan to work for him.

1918[]

  • Marcel continued to fight in Séchault, France during World War I, where he had attained the rank of Corporal following the death of his predecessor, as the Harlem Hell Fighters admired his dedication to their work in maintaining the line. However, their regiment was apparently not a priority when it came to Army headquarters, and they became low on most supplies, such as food and ammunition. They were also not given gas masks, despite the fact that they knew the German military has poisonous gas that they were using against their enemies.
  • Klaus tracked Marcel down to the trench where his regiment was fighting in France and summoned his adopted son to their regional headquarters in order to try to convince him to come back to the United States. However, Marcel refused to abandon his men and even rejected his gift of women to feed on despite the fact that he had been starving for weeks.
    • Marcel returned to battle after his reunion with Klaus to find that his fellow soldiers had been exposed to mustard gas while he was gone and were unable to fight the effects without gas masks. Many of the men were already dead, but Joe Dalton and around a dozen others were still alive, though they were fading fast. When Marcel apologized to them and lamented that he had failed them, Joe insisted that he wouldn't be failing them if he turned them into vampires and gave them a fighting chance at survival. Though he was initially torn, not wanting to condemn them to a live of vampirism, he ultimately agreed to Joe's request and sired all the survivors. When they awoke in transition, Marcel led the men over the trenches and onto the battlefields, where they fed on the German soldiers and completed their transformation into vampires, continuing their reputation of maintaining their line when all of the others failed.
  • Archer and Sons Funeral Home was established.

1919[]

  • Marcel returned to New Orleans after World War I ended and reunited with Klaus, Elijah and Rebekah at the compound, where they were throwing him a welcome home party. However, Rebekah, still angry with Marcel for choosing vampirism over their relationship in the 1800s, remained cold to him despite his attempts to talk to her.
  • Papa Tunde, a witch who practiced both ancestral and sacrificial magic, arrived to New Orleans and became the leader of the French Quarter Coven. Papa Tunde promised to help the coven vanquish their enemies, and in doing so, killed any human, witch, werewolf, and vampire who opposed his rule and used their deaths to fuel his sacrificial magic. Locals who were killed by Tunde during this time included Mayor O'Connell and many members of the Guerrera werewolf crime family.
  • Elijah and Klaus attempted to form an alliance with the Guerrera family by making the following deal, which would benefit both sides in the face of the recent passage of Prohibition in the United States: the brothers would allow the Guerreras access to the ports they controlled so the mobsters could smuggle alcohol, which was now illegal following the passage of Prohibition, into the city; in doing so, the brothers would make the Guerreras the public face of the ports while Elijah and Klaus, who were trying to remain inconspicuous to avoid Mikael being drawn to their new home, secretly remained in charge and would make the important business decisions.
  • Klaus, knowing Papa Tunde posed a threat to their lifestyle in New Orleans, studied the witch for weeks to learn his weaknesses before making his first move. When he learned that the bulk of Tunde's power came from the fact that he was channeling the magical power of his twin sons, Klaus killed the young boys before taking advantage of Tunde's weakness and killing him by gouging out his eyes with his thumbs.
  • After Tunde's death, Marcel admitted to Rebekah that he was the one who brought the powerful witch to New Orleans, in hopes that he would chase Klaus away from the city, allowing him and Rebekah to finally be be together as they always wanted. When Rebekah informed him that Klaus had dealt with a hundred Tundes in his life, they realized that there was one person who Klaus feared enough to flee town to escape from him-- their father, Mikael, the oldest Original vampire and vampire hunter who had been chasing them all for centuries. Rebekah and Marcel then decided to seek the help of a witch to summon Mikael to New Orleans.
  • Rebekah befriended a fellow nurse named Genevieve who worked with her at the Fleur-de-Lis Sanatorium with her and who also happened to be a powerful witch of the French Quarter Coven. Initially, Rebekah only got close to her in order to use her to summon Mikael to New Orleans and chase Klaus away so that she and Marcel could finally have a chance at happiness without his interference; however, Rebekah unintentionally grew fond of Genevieve and started to have second thoughts about taking advantage of her kindness and friendship.
    • Eventually, Rebekah and Marcel decided to go forward with their plans and instructed Genevieve to send Mikael a magical message to summon him to New Orleans, leading Genevieve to believe that she would be reuniting their family after many years apart.
  • After Tunde was defeated, Klaus and Elijah were finally able to successfully unite all of the human and supernatural factions in New Orleans to fight Prohibition.
    • Thrilled to finally have achieved peace between the humans and supernatural beings, Klaus decided to finally give Marcel and Rebekah his blessing to be together after all these years, not knowing that the two had betrayed him by summoning Mikael to town with Genevieve's help. However, since it had been six months since they had sent the message, Rebekah and Marcel hoped that perhaps Mikael hadn't received the message, as they didn't want to ruin their relationships with Klaus now that they were finally happy as a family. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to any of them, Mikael had returned to town that day and was surreptitiously watching them to learn more about his children's lives in New Orleans.
  • Worried about Klaus finding out about their betrayal, Rebekah confronted Genevieve and demanded that she rescind Mikael's summons to New Orleans, but Genevieve insisted that the spell didn't work that way, and that it was now impossible to take back. Rebekah's anger ultimately led Genevieve to realize that the Original vampire had used her and vowed to tell Klaus in hopes that he would show them all mercy. To prevent her from exposing her to Klaus, Rebekah forced a bloody handkerchief of one of their influenza patients into Genevieve's face, infecting her with the disease and essentially sentencing her to death. Clara Summerlin (who was being possessed by Céleste Dubois) walked in just as Rebekah had done this, forcing her to infect Clara as well to keep her secret safe. She then compelled several orderlies to keep them isolated in quarantine for the duration of their illness, which is where both women ultimately died.
    • However, while Genevieve's remains were consecrated to the earth and her spirit sent to join the Ancestors within the Ancestral Plane, Céleste continued to use dark magic to gain a form of immortality by using spirit possession spells to inhabit the bodies of young French Quarter witches, a cycle she repeated dozens of times over the next century.
  • The same day of his arrival, Mikael confronted Elijah at the compound. When Elijah refused to help Mikael kill Klaus, Mikael staked him with a regular wooden stake, temporarily neutralizing him to buy him time to attack Klaus without interference.
  • Afterward, Mikael tracked Klaus to the opera house, where he proceeded to compel the entire audience to stay seated and laugh at the show he had put together to further torture Klaus. He also killed and mutilated several werewolves and vampires, including Klaus' lover Lana, and he seriously wounded Marcel as well before setting their bodies up in grotesque poses on the stage. After another physical fight with his three children, Mikael burned down the New Orleans Opera House and everyone inside it, though Elijah, Klaus, and Rebekah managed to escape mostly unharmed.
  • Klaus and Rebekah ultimately fled New Orleans to seek safety elsewhere, while Elijah stayed behind to delay Mikael. By this point, all of the Mikaelson siblings believed Marcel to be dead, not knowing that he had actually survived his injuries and escaped before he could be burned in the opera house fire.
    • At some point after this confrontation with his father, Elijah left New Orleans as well, though, for unknown reasons, he set off on his own journey while Rebekah and Klaus stayed together during their travels. Elijah eventually came to believe that Klaus had daggered Rebekah and scattered the bodies of their siblings across the seas, and as far as it is known, the two didn't reunite again until 2010, the night that Klaus finally broke his hybrid curse.
    • After the Mikaelsons fled town, Marcel began working to gain control over New Orleans by choosing suitable humans to turn into vampires and amassing an army to give him more power. He also hoped that Rebekah would return for him, but when she didn't (because she thought he had been killed) he converted the foundation of the house he had planned on building for them to live together into a prison for vampires who betrayed them that became known as the Garden.
  • March 4: The New Orleans witches celebrated Fête de Cadeau. as they did every year. It was also on this day that the infamous serial killer known as the Axeman decided to write a letter to the Times Picayune newspaper that stated his gift to the city was a night where he wouldn't kill anyone, though he would only do this if everyone in the city threw a party at their houses and played jazz music as loud as they could. If they didn't, he said he would kill thousands of citizens. However, New Orleans did as they were asked, and the Axeman stayed true to his word by not killing anyone.

1922[]

  • At some point in this year, Klaus and Rebekah settled in Chicago, Illinois after spending three years on the run following Mikael's massacre in New Orleans.
  • Stefan met Klaus and Rebekah for the first time at Gloria's speakeasy in Chicago, where the owner, a witch named Gloria, sang jazz music. The three then spent much of their time together at this speakeasy, where they would feed on the patrons and often compel them embarrass themselves for their own amusement. Stefan also began a romantic relationship with Rebekah, and the two began to care for each other a great deal.
  • Damon was also living in Chicago in 1922, during which time he claimed he was "indulging in his own Daisy Buchannans." Also residing in Chicago was Katherine, although neither Salvatore brother realized that she had been tracking them through the years, as Stefan believed she was dead, and Damon believed her to be desiccated and trapped in the vampire's tomb under Fell's Church.
  • Mikael, still seeking out his children so he could kill them, began working with the Chicago Police Department as the Chief of Police in order to use their resources to help him out. He and the officers under his command raided Gloria's bar one night by shooting wooden bullets at the patrons. Upon realizing that Mikael was with the police and had outed them as vampires, Klaus and Rebekah once again fled the city to get away from him, but not before Klaus compelled Stefan to forget he had ever known them until he told him otherwise. However, when Rebekah informed Klaus that she would rather stay behind with Stefan if Klaus wouldn't allow him to come with them, Klaus daggered her and brought her body with him in her coffin. She would then remain in this state for 88 years.
  • Samantha Gilbert, after finally having been driven to insanity after dying too many times while wearing her Gilbert ring, eventually confessed to the multiple murders of Founder's Council members in 1912. She was then subsequently put under suicide watch, which involved removing most of her personal belongings from her room, including the ring. However, the damage had already been done to her psyche, so even despite no longer wearing the ring, she was still driven to kill two orderlies at the hospital. She eventually became so desperate for relief that she ended up committing suicide by using a knitting needle to give herself a lobotomy.

1924[]

  • Lexi found Stefan in Chicago and made him go through what she called the "Ripper Detox" routine for the second time.
  • There have been conflicting reports on how long this process took; it was once said that it took Lexi thirty years to "detox" Stefan, but it was also later said that he was "back in circulation" around 1935, which seemed to indicate that while he was still fighting his cravings, he was still able to live his life semi-normally.

1925[]

  • Marcel and his vampire army, which included Joe Dalton, the Army soldier he turned while fighting in World War I, launched a guerrilla attack against the Guerrera werewolf pack, killing all of its approximately one hundred members over the course of four days and leaving only one survivor: Gabriel Guerrera, who was only a baby at the time of his family's deaths. Gabriel was then adopted by another family in New Orleans and was renamed Gabriel Correa.
  • Gabriel would later continue the Guerrera family's bloodline and presumably passed on the knowledge of their family's werewolf heritage to his descendants, though the subsequent generations of Guerreras/Correas were all very careful to not trigger their werewolf curses in order to maintain their covers as humans involved in the Human Faction. The 21st century Guerrera/Correa family would not reveal their werewolf nature to the public or trigger their curses by taking a human life until they gained possession of the moonlight rings created by Genevieve in 2012, which allowed them to control their transformations and prevent being forced to turn on the full moon.

1928[]

  • Klaus, after daggering his sister Rebekah a few years before, was in France, and had a "falling out" with a powerful local people called the Gatineau family.

1933[]

  • Klaus was in Germany, and befrinded a vampire artist named August Müller, who, as Klaus later found out, saw Werewolves as abomination, much like how Klaus' father, Mikael viewed them.
  • Elijah followed Klaus to Germany, after they haven't seen each other since 1919, when they ran away from Mikael. He came to inform Klaus that his actions in Germany caught Mikael's attention. Elijah tells Klaus that Werewolves are being killed in their hundreds within 20 miles of where they are.
  • But later Klaus and Elijah found out that it was August who was killing the werewolves, and told him to stop. But August didn't stop, and Klaus try to save the wolves, while Elijah told him not to intervene, as this is not his fight. Klaus got mad, and accidentally tells him that he daggered Rebekah almost a decade before. Klaus then killed August and his people, and spared his family: Greta, Antoinette, and Roman Sienna.

1935[]

  • Stefan finally regained control of his cravings for human blood, and in his journal, he detailed the fact that, following his return to relatively normal feeding habits, Lexi then became focused on their new goal: trying to make him laugh.

1942[]

  • Damon, who had moved to New Orleans, began dating a woman named Charlotte, who he eventually turned into a vampire at her request.
  • As part of Lexi's addiction recovery program, she encouraged Stefan to contact Damon so that they could make peace with each other. Damon ultimately agreed to meet him, and the two met in New Orleans for a drink to catch up, though it went badly after Damon's girlfriend Charlotte took Damon's joking remark seriously and brought him a bleeding human to feed on, inadvertently triggering Stefan's human blood cravings in the process.
  • Stefan, who had just joined the Army to fight in World War II, was assigned to a deployment in Egypt. When Damon learned of this development in Stefan's life, he decided to enlist as well so he could fight in the war alongside his brother. However, when Lexi heard this news, she convinced him it was a bad idea with regards to Stefan's new-found "sobriety," and Damon made the decision to do the right thing for his brother's well-being by backing out at the last moment.
  • When Charlotte began behaving recklessly and following Damon's joking commands literally, Damon realized that she was sire-bound to him and sought magical help to break the bond before he left New Orleans. The witch he consulted at Nandi's Specials, Valerie LaMarche, claimed that he needed to kill twelve humans in order for her to do the spell, and he was so desperate to break the bond that he did as he was asked. However, it was later revealed that Valerie had lied to him about doing the spell and only wanted him to kill the humans so she could tap into an incredibly dark magic known as Expression. Before Damon sacrificed the humans for the spell and left New Orleans, he told Charlotte to count all of the bricks in the buildings downtown until he returned, believing that she would be free of his influence as soon as Valerie broke the sire bond. However, since Valerie did not actually perform the spell, Charlotte still felt compelled to do what he had instructed, and counted the bricks on and off for the next seventy years.

ca. 1943[]

  • Lorenzo enlisted in the British military during World War II and was eventually deployed elsewhere in Europe. Also in his regiment was an American military physician named Dr. Whitmore, who eventually figured out that Enzo was a vampire after injuries Enzo sustained in battle healed unnaturally fast. Curious as to how vampire physiology worked and how their immortality, regenerative healing factor, and ability to heal others with their blood could be used to advance human medicine, Dr. Whitmore faked Enzo's death and sent him back to the United States, where he would become a vampire test subject for the Augustine Society at Whitmore College for the next sixty years.

ca. 1950's[]

  • At some point in this decade, Marcel Gerard enrolled in law school, presumably in New Orleans.
  • During this decade, Lorenzo St. John, who had been held captive by Augustine for nearly ten years, continued to be tortured in the name of the advancement of human medicine. When he was not subjected to surgical procedures without anesthesia, Enzo was studied by Maggie James, who was hired by Augustine to observe his psychological and behavioral patterns in an effort to better understand vampires, though she was not initially aware of their more barbaric scientific pursuits.
    • The two eventually fell in love after quite some time of having daily sessions. To this end, Maggie offered to allow Enzo to turn her, both so that she would be strong enough to break him out of captivity and because it would allow them to be together forever. However, Enzo, loving her too deeply and not wanting to doom her to his fate, instead removed the vervain bracelet she wore and compelled her to forget she knew him, forget that she knew vampires existed, and to leave town.
    • Some time later, Maggie moved to Mystic Falls.

1953[]

  • Four people were found dead in Mystic Falls from what was believed to be violent animal attacks that left the victims drained of blood. It is unknown if these deaths were due to being fed on by Stefan Salvatore, Damon Salvatore, or another unknown vampire attack, but it is all but confirmed that these attacks were not ordinary animal attacks as the townspeople originally assumed.
  • June 11: Damon and Stefan were invited to the Salvatore Boarding House by their distant relative Joseph Salvatore, who, unbeknownst to either of them, was planning to set them up; Joseph had made a deal with Dr. Whitmore of the Augustine Society that involved him orchestrating a meeting with his vampire ancestors that would allow the doctor to capture them in exchange for a large sum of money. Damon arrived to the house first, and when he joined Joseph in the parlor for a drink, he was surprised to learn that the man was aware of his status as a member of the undead.
    • However, when Joseph stabbed Damon in the neck with a syringe of vervain to weaken him in order to more easily be captured, Damon managed to smash his glass of bourbon so he could fatally stab his half-brother's descendant in the neck with one of the glass shards. Dr. Whitmore then arrived and remarked on the fact that Joseph's death was convenient, since he now no longer had to pay him for his services, before he captured Damon and brought him back to Whitmore College.
    • Stefan arrived an unknown about of time afterward, only to find Joseph dead at the boarding house. He immediately assumed that Damon had simply killed him for whatever reason before leaving immediately afterward, not knowing that Joseph had set Damon up in the first place. As a result of this assumption on Stefan's part, Damon was experimented on and tortured by the Augustine Society for the next five years without anyone knowing where he was or what was happening to him.
  • June 12: Franklin Fell reported on Joseph's death on the local news and inadvertently caught Stefan on camera during the broadcast. Stefan was also spotted by one of the boarders who was staying at the house at the time and who would later remember him in the early 21st century.
  • In New Orleans, a clusters of violent rituals took places in 4 different locations throughout the city, over the span of two months.

1957[]

  • Damon had been held captive by Augustine for four years, where he made friends with his cellmate, Lorenzo St. John, who had been captured by Dr. Whitmore during World War II, ten years prior to Damon's capture, and had been tortured and experimented on ever since.
  • December 31: Augustine held their annual New Year's Eve party, which they used as a forum to announce the progress they had made in their research on vampires for the duration of the year. During this party, Damon and Enzo were kept in a vervain-coated cage while the other party attendants mingled and drank champagne. Damon was only let out of the cage long enough for Dr. Whitmore to take some of his blood in order to demonstrate the healing properties of vampire blood to the rest of the guests.
  • After the party, Damon and Enzo realized that they could possibly escape during the next year's party if one of them gave up their rations to the other so that they could build up enough strength to fight their way out of the cage. After Damon won their game of "Paper, Scissors, Stone," it was decided that Damon would drink Enzo's blood rations for the next year as they put their plan into action, with Enzo only given occasional sips in order to heal his experiment wounds and prevent him from desiccation.

1958[]

  • January 1: Damon escaped the Augustine Society after first overpowering Dr. Whitmore as he was let out of the cage to give him his blood, and then subsequently killing all of the attendants of the New Year's Eve party. While he was attacking the guests, he accidentally knocked over a lit candelabra, which then set the building on fire. However, when he was unable to break Enzo out of his cage due to the vervain covering the bars, Damon had to choose between both of them dying or Damon saving himself by leaving Enzo behind. In order to save himself from being plagued by the guilt of betraying the man who had become his best friend, Damon turned off his humanity switch prior to fleeing Augustine's building, and would not turn it back on again until sometime in 2009.
  • Damon went on believing that Enzo had perished in the fire. However, in reality, Enzo actually had survived after being rescued by one of the few Augustine members who also survived the inferno, and he would be continue to be tortured and experimented on for the next 64 years.

1960[]

  • At some point during this decade, Stefan stopped drinking human blood, and would not drink it again until early 2010.
  • At some point in this year, Maggie James was somehow able to recall at least part of the memories that Lorenzo St. John compelled her to forget in the 1950s.
  • November 8: Damon killed Maggie after she attempted to kill him in order to get revenge on him for leaving Enzo for dead in the Augustine Society fire. Once he had drained her blood, Damon then ripped her head off in order to make it look as though Stefan had killed her in a Ripper relapse, as he was still resentful toward his brother for never realizing that he was in trouble after he had been captured by Augustine.

1962[]

  • Five people were found dead and drained of blood in Mystic Falls from violent animal attacks.

1969[]

  • October: Sheila Bennett led an anti-war sit-in, which Stefan attended. According to Stefan, the event drew quite a crowd, and the people in attendance were mesmerized by her speech.

ca. 1970s[]

  • Stefan attended Harvard University.

1971[]

1972[]

  • Stefan went on a double date with Hugh Hefner and twin Playboy Playmates. His date was Miss June. (However, he may have been joking, because there is no record that Debbie Davies had a twin.)
  • Twins Malachai Parker and Josette Parker were born in Portland, Oregon to Joshua Parker and his unnamed wife.

1974[]

  • Three people were found dead and drained of blood in Mystic Falls from violent animal attacks.
  • Slater was sired by an unknown vampire. Shortly afterward, he decided to spend his eternity learning, and began his academic career at unknown colleges, where he went on to collect eighteen bachelor's degrees, three master's degrees and four Ph.Ds before his death in 2010.

1975[]

1976[]

1977[]

  • The Strix society of vampires used scare tactics to infiltrate and take control of aspects of New York City by having a member pretend to become a serial killer who ultimately became known as the Son of Sam.
  • Damon, who was then living in New York and whose humanity was still turned off, was mistaken for the Son of Sam due to his indiscriminate feeding habits. He also worked for a vampire named Will, a bar owner who also sold fake identities. As part of their deal, Damon fed on and killed people who matched the description of his clients who were seeking new identities and stole their IDs to give to Will's customers, and in return, Will let Damon feed on the patrons of his bar. Damon did not know it at the time, but Katherine was one of Will's clients, and many of the IDs that Damon procured ended up being given to her whenever she needed a new identity.
  • Stefan was once again detoxing from human blood in Mystic Falls, but when he heard about Damon's killing spree in New York, he sent Lexi to help him, just like she had helped Stefan regain his humanity in the past. Lexi tried to do this by awakening emotions and barraging him with memories of Katherine in the hope of helping Damon turn his humanity back on, but after six months of partying together and being forced to reminisce about Katherine, Damon became angry and frustrated by Lexi's lessons, which he referred to as "constant torturing," and decided to get back at her.
    • He then pretended he was in love with her before luring her to the roof that night, where they had sex for the first time. After she fell asleep, Damon carefully barricaded the door to return inside. At sunrise, the sunlight began to burn Lexi's skin due to her lack of a daylight ring, forcing her to stand pressed against the door to avoid being burned. Damon briefly taunted her and revealed his true plans to her before fleeing and leaving Lexi to hide on the roof until sundown. Lexi would subsequently hold a grudge against Damon until her death in 2009.

1980[]

1982[]

  • April 7: Will Kinney was born.

1988[]

1990[]

1991[]

1992[]

  • Peter Maxwell threw the bell in the river under the Wickery Bridge.
  • June 22: Elena and Alexandria Gilbert were born in New Orleans, Louisiana to John Gilbert and Isobel Flemming. Logan and Lilith Labonair, the members of one of the two royal bloodlines of the Crescent Wolf Pack, arranged for Alex to marry the recently-born Jackson Kenner of the second royal bloodline in the clan.
  • In New Orleans, violent rituals took place in the Algiers, Treme, the Bayou, and Marigny.
  • Summer: In New Orleans, Richard Xavier Dumas killed Hayley's parents after they revealed their intention to make peace with Marcel and his vampire army in order to, at the very least, call a truce, if not develop an alliance with them.
  • Marcel found baby Hayley, Elena, and Alex in their cradles after finding Hayley's parents dead at their home. He brought them to Father Kieran O'Connell, priest at St. Anne's Church, to help find them an adoptive family. John heard of what happened and brought Elena and Alex to Mystic Falls where Grayson Gilbert and Miranda Sommers-Gilbert adopted their nieces.
  • It is presumed that shortly afterward, tensions between the Crescent Wolf Clan and Marcel's vampire army come to a head, and Marcel persuaded the witch Brynne Deveraux (who, unbeknownst to anyone, was possessed by fellow witch Céleste Dubois) to cast what would become known as the Crescent curse on the pack.
  • This curse forced all of its members who have activated their lycanthropy by killing a human to be trapped in their wolf form at all times, with the exception of the night of the full moon, when they would return to their human form for a few short hours. With this curse, the werewolves lost their control over the French Quarter and New Orleans as a whole, leaving a power vacuum that allowed Marcel and his vampires to take even more control over the factions.
  • October 10: Caroline Forbes was born in the town of Mystic Falls, Virginia to Bill Forbes and Elizabeth Forbes.

1993[]

1994[]

  • May 9: In Portland, Oregon, Malachai Parker came to the realization that his family had no intention of allowing him to perform the Merge ceremony with his twin sister Josette to determine who would become the coven's next leader, and subsequently figured out why they had a second set of twins-- they believed that his Siphoner nature, along with the emotional instability he developed after being constantly referred to as an "abomination" made him unfit to lead, but they also knew that his Siphoner powers were strong enough to overpower Jo in the Merge ceremony if they performed it, which is why they needed another set of twins who could take their place instead.
  • This revelation made Kai so furious that he sought to kill his younger twin siblings Lucas and Olivia, who his parents specifically conceived with the intention of having them perform the ritual to become the next leader instead, believing it would give the coven no choice but to allow him and Jo to complete the Merge ceremony as planned.
  • When Kai was unable to immediately find Luke and Liv, he violently slaughtered four of his other siblings who got in his way. He also stabbed Jo in the stomach with a hunting knife when she tried to protect the twins; though it was a non-fatal injury, it was still severe enough that Jo ultimately lost her spleen as a result of the trauma.
    • Jo, desperate to save her two remaining siblings, used a cloaking spell to hide Luke and Liv and came up with a plan to trick her brother in hopes of convincing Kai to spare them. This plan involved relinquishing her magic, placing it in the same hunting knife Kai used to stab her, and hiding it in a nearby tree stump before promising to perform the Merge with Kai on the condition that he didn't harm Luke and Liv.
    • Kai agreed to Jo's terms, and their father Joshua appeared to agree as well, as he then summoned the rest of the coven to prepare for the ceremony. However, he then secretly contacted their family friend Sheila Bennett for help with a spell to take down Kai in retribution for his crimes against the family and coven.
  • May 10: In Portland, Oregon, the entirety of the Gemini Coven gathered in the woods near the Parker house so that Jo and Kai could merge as one and allow the stronger twin to ascend to leader of the coven using the power of the solar eclipse overhead. However, when the twins began the ritual, Kai realized that something was going wrong and became suspicious as to why he couldn't siphon any of Jo's magic. Suddenly, the coven, led by Joshua, who held the Ascendant in his outstretched hand, began casting a Bennett family spell that created a prison world where Kai would be forever trapped in a snapshot of that day.
  • Kai ultimately would remain trapped alone in the prison world for eighteen years, during which time he would attempt to kill himself on multiple occasions, only to be magically reborn again to repeat the cycle as part of his punishment.
    • In Mystic Falls, Virginia, Liz and Damon met for the first time at the celebration of the solar eclipse held at the Salvatore Boarding House, but he compelled her to forget she had met him and Stefan.
    • Damon, angry at Stefan for misunderstanding his intentions for returning to their hometown, killed the pregnant Gail and several other party attendees in retribution. Though Damon compelled Liz to forget that she had met him and his brother, the murders of the party's attendants were so suspicious that the Founder's Council was reinstated to investigate the case and hunt down any vampires who had potentially moved into the town.
    • This was the last time Stefan and Damon would see each other until Damon returned to Mystic Falls to see his brother and stay at the boarding house in September 2009.
    • Sarah Salvatore was born in the town of Mystic Falls, Virginia to Zach Salvatore and the late Gail. She was delivered prematurely via a cesarean section by Dr. Grayson Gilbert following her mother's untimely death, and spent several months in an incubator after her birth before she was healthy enough to be discharged.

1995[]

  • The Original Vampire and Vampire Hunter, Mikael, arrived in Mystic Falls, as he was looking for the human Petrova doppelgänger, Elena and Alexandria Gilbert, whom he knew Klaus would seek out to break his curse once he learned of her existence. When nobody was able to kill him, Abby Bennett Wilson used dark magic to desiccate Mikael and imprison him in a crypt in Charlotte, North Carolina in order to help and protect her best friend Miranda and her daughters Elena and Alex. The amount of magic necessary to cast the spell nearly killed her, and she became too emotionally and physically weak to practice witchcraft. Seeing this as an opportunity to start over without the complications and responsibilities of being a Bennett witch, she left her husband and her daughter and moved to North Carolina.
    • It is possible that Anna was also involved in Mikael's imprisonment, as she knew quite a bit about him and where he was entombed.
  • At some point in this year, Isobel Flemming began to research the supernatural while studying anthropology, folklore, and parapsychology at Duke University. It was here that she met her soon-to-be husband, Alaric Saltzman.
  • Davina Claire was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in late 1994/early 1995 to an unnamed mother and an unknown father. Shortly after her birth, Davina's father left the family, and she hasn't seen him since.
  • Monique Deveraux was born in New Orleans, Louisiana to Jane-Anne Deveraux and an unknown father in late 1994/early 1995 as a result of an unplanned pregnancy when they were teenagers.
  • Abigail and Cassie were born to their respective unnamed parents in New Orleans in late 1994/early 1995.
  • April Young was born to Pastor Young and an unnamed mother in Mystic Falls.

1997[]

  • July 20: Damon kills Ashley and Aaron Whitmore III, leaving behind their six year old son, Aaron Whitmore.

1999[]

  • June 25-26: Dr. Grayson Gilbert, who was working as a medical researcher for the Augustine Society, conducted an experiment on a vampire test subject in the basement of his medical clinic for the society that involved shocking the vampire with 3,000-4,000 volts of electricity to determine what effect, if any, it would cause to their healing ability.
  • It is possible (and very likely) that this test subject was Enzo, as he had been in Augustine's captivity since 1943.

2000[]

  • Jeremy Gilbert accidentally broke his arm after diving off of the dock out at the Gilbert lake house when he was six years old.

Late 2000

2001[]

  • Caroline buried Bonnie's teddy bear when she was 9 somewhere in the woods.

2003[]

2004[]

  • Thirteen-year-old Hayley Marshall went on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico with several of her friends. At some point during their trip, she and her friends snuck out and got drunk before going out on the boat for some fun. Hayley was driving the boat when they got into an accident which ultimately killed one of her friends. Unbeknownst to Hayley, she had just triggered her werewolf curse by (accidentally) causing the death of a human.
  • On the next full moon, Hayley transformed into a werewolf for the first time in the living room of her home, leading to Hayley and her adoptive parents finally realizing that she was a werewolf. Her parents were so appalled and horrified by this revelation that they kicked her out of the house. Hayley then spent nearly a decade on her own as she traveled around the country in search of information about her biological parents.

2007[]

2008[]

  • Seylah Chelon, having been employed by Triad Industries, saw something she shouldn't have - Malivore. She became the hunted instead of the hunter. As a result, she was thrown into the pit, and effectively erased from the collective conscious of the world. She would spend the next two years in the isolated darkness of the dimension, until she was released.

Unknown 2009[]

  • Atticus Shane's young son Sam died in an accident. His wife, the witch Caitlin Shane, used Expression to try and bring him back to life. However, the amount of Expression power she needed to draw to do the spell consumed her, and six months after her son's death, she died as well.

May 23, 2009[]

  • Alexandria Gilbert had a fight with her boyfriend Matt Donovan while at a bonfire party. When Elena and Alex were waiting for a ride home from their parents, they met Damon Salvatore for the first time, though he compelled them to forget about their encounter before they left.
  • Grayson and Miranda, took Wickery Bridge instead of the direct route of Old Miller Road because the storm from the previous day had broken off a branch to a tree that knocked down a powerline. This same storm kept them from surprising their children with visit to their lake house that weekend.
  • When Elena and Alex's parents were driving them home, they got into an accident that caused their car to fall off Wickery Bridge and into the river below. ("Pilot")
  • Stefan Salvatore saw the accident and dove into the water to rescue them. Grayson Gilbert insisted that Stefan save Elena and Alex first, so he freed them from the car and left them on the shore to be found by EMS. However, when he went back for Grayson and Miranda Sommers-Gilbert, they were already dead.
  • Two hours before the accident, Miranda called Sheriff Elizabeth Forbes and left her a voicemail after she and her sister Jenna Sommers caught Jeremy Gilbert smoking marijuana in his room. Jeremy later said she was trying to scare him by pretending as though she was going to report him to the police.

Summer, 2009[]

  • Elena and Jeremy spent some time staying at the Forbes House with Liz and Caroline Forbes following the death of their parents while Jenna prepared to become their legal guardian.
  • Alex spend the summer traveling to piece herself back together.
  • Stefan, who was shocked by both Elena and Alex's striking resemblance to Katherine. He followed Alex around the world, observing her to ensure that she wasn't Katherine under a false identity. After realizing Alex was nothing like Katherine, he decided he "needed" to know her. It is possible that Damon was also observing her and Elena at the same time.

August, 2009[]

  • Katherine, living under the alias of "Kathy" in Emerald Coast, Florida, compelled a man to pick a fight with his friend Mason Lockwood. Mason, whose latent anger issues were triggered by this fight, ultimately killed his friend on accident when he began to fight back, and as a result, he activated his werewolf curse, which was Katherine's intention all along.
  • It's interesting to note that, according to Stevie, Mason was hanging out with a werewolf pack even before he had triggered his curse. This pack did not approve of his relationship with "Kathy," who they could sense was a vampire.
  • After he triggered his curse, Mason began asking questions about the Sun and the Moon Curse, likely due to Katherine's influence, as she herself knew the truth about the curse and had Mason in mind for one of the ingredients of the ritual to break it.

August 31, 2009[]

  • Mason began a diary that detailed all of his feelings and experiences after he learned that he was a werewolf. Caroline Forbes and Tyler Lockwood would later find this diary weeks after his death.

September 4, 2009[]

  • Mason Lockwood transformed into a werewolf for the first time on the full moon.[1] He recorded the entire transformation on video and then described his experience afterward in his journal.

September 6, 2009[]

  • Damon fed on and killed Darren Malloy and Brooke Fenton after luring them into a trap on a dark road.

Septemberer 7, 2009[]

  • Elena, Alex, and their brother Jeremy lived with their aunt Jenna Sommers (Miranda's younger sister) following the death of their parents.
  • First day of school year in high school. Alex officially met Stefan for the first time, as she was unconscious when he saved her four months earlier.

Septemberer 8, 2009[]

  • A Back to School Party was held in the woods near the high school. Damon attacked and fed on two campers and killed them. He also fed on Vicki Donovan, but she managed to survive after Jeremy Gilbert found her in the woods.
  • Stefan and Damon reunited for the first time since the solar eclipse party at the Salvatore Boarding House on May 10th, 1994.

  • Vicki spent the day in the hospital after being attacked by Damon the day before.
  • Jenna attended a parent-teacher conference with Mr. Tanner, where they discussed Jeremy's missed classes and drug use.
  • Alex met Damon at the boarding house. She believed it to be the first time they had met, but in reality, it was the second, as she had been compelled to forget their first meeting.

September 10, 2009[]

  • There was a festival held in the Town Square to celebrate the comet passing over Mystic Falls for the first time since 1864, 145 years ago.
  • Damon threatened to expose Stefan, but Stefan called his bluff. In retaliation, Damon attacked and fed on Caroline.
  • Stefan and Elena kissed for the first time outside the boarding house following the festival to celebrate the passing comet.
  • Although she remained unseen until Bloodlines, Anna arrived in Mystic Falls on this date to witness the passing comet. She was responsible for turning Logan Fell and Ben McKittrick into vampires shortly after her arrival.

September 11, 2009[]

  • Damon spent the day feeding on Caroline at her home, and she missed class as a result.
  • Stefan tried out for and made it onto the school's football team as their new starting wide-receiver.
  • Damon attempted to make peace with Stefan, and even went as far as to say that maybe he, too, could learn to be a "non-living living person."
  • Alex invited Bonnie Bennett and Stefan over to her house for dinner in hopes that Bonnie would learn to like her new boyfriend and that Elena can meet him too. Caroline and Damon ended up crashing their dinner, and Damon managed to convince Alex to invite him into the house despite Stefan's protests, as she didn't know that Damon is a vampire.
  • Damon convinced Alex to drop out of the cheerleading squad, which she did the following day to join back on the track team.

September 12, 2009[]

  • Stefan gave Alex the necklace filled with vervain to protect her from Damon and other vampires.
  • Tyler picked a fight with Jeremy over Vicki. Stefan separated the two and cut his hand in the process. Knowing that his hand would heal almost instantly, Stefan claimed that he hadn't actually been injured and that the blood on his hands wasn't his own, but despite his efforts to the contrary, Alex became suspicious of his explanation.
  • Damon attempted to compel Alex to kiss him, but it fails due to the vervain necklace given to her by Stefan earlier in the day.
  • Damon killed Coach Tanner in hopes of proving to Stefan that he had no more "humanity" left in him.
  • Bonnie experienced visions that corresponded to where Coach Tanner's body was ultimately found that night, further hinting her growing psychic and magical abilities.
  • Damon visited Alex in her bedroom while she was sleeping and caressed her face, demonstrating that he may not have been as lacking in humanity as he suggested.

September 22, 2009[]

  • When Stefan began to fear Damon's recent murders would attract suspicion by the Founder's Council, Damon covered his tracks by bringing a mountain lion into the woods. It was later reported that this was the animal responsible for the recent killings.

September 24, 2009[]

  • The 150th Mystic Falls Founder's Ball was held at the Lockwood Mansion. Stefan attended the party with Alex, while Damon attended with Caroline.
  • Tyler invited Vicki to be his date to the party, but once she arrived, he purposely avoided bringing her inside, instead choosing to have them hang out in the backyard. When Vicki realized Tyler was embarrassed to be seen with her in front of his parents, she left the party and looked for Jeremy instead.
  • At the party, Jenna ran into Logan Fell, who she dated in her youth, for the first time since she returned to Mystic Falls from Whitmore College. Although she initially resisted his advances, he eventually convinced her to go out for lunch with him.
  • Damon sneaked upstairs during the party and took a crystal from one of the boxes hidden in the upstairs study. When Caroline asked about it, he admitted that he had hidden it there many years before, but refused to explain the crystal's importance. However, he accidentally dropped the crystal when he was weakened by vervain and captured by Stefan, and Caroline ended up finding it and keeping it for herself.
  • Stefan and Zach Salvatore managed to lock the weakened and unconscious Damon in the cellar with the intention of starving him to the point of desiccation.

September 28, 2009[]

  • Stefan continued to keep Damon locked in the cellar, where he was starved of blood and weakened further with more vervain injections. Stefan then informed Damon that his ultimate plan was to move him to the Salvatore crypt after he was desiccated.
  • Alex and Elena found out that Jeremy and Vicki have slept together multiple times.
  • After Alex and Stefan got into an argument that involved Alex accusing him of hiding things from her, Stefan made dinner for her at the Gilbert House and was open to her with select details of his history and interests to keep her from suspecting that he is a vampire.
  • Jenna went to dinner with Logan Fell and seemed to be holding less of a grudge against him for his past actions against her.

September 29, 2009[]

  • The "Sexy Suds Car Wash Fundraiser" was held by the Mystic Falls High School cheerleading squad to help raise money for the school's athletic teams.
  • Even weakened by vervain, Damon managed to use his connection to Caroline to summon her to the boarding house to open the cellar door so he could escape. Caroline was able to open the door, but when Zach tried to intervene, Damon killed him. He then tried to attack and feed on Caroline, but he was unable to stop her from escaping through the open door because Stefan took his daylight ring and he was immediately burned by the sunlight.
  • Bonnie accidentally set a car on fire when Tiki was rude to her, and finally had to admit to herself that something was going on with her. She then visited her Grams and asked for help.
  • Damon bit and fed on Vicki (again) after being overcome by bloodlust as a result of being starved for days. He then did the same to her stoner friends, killed them in the process, and set their bodies on fire to destroy the evidence. However, Vicki managed to survive Damon's attack yet again, which both surprised and impressed him.
  • Alex, after Tiki's grandfather mentioned to her that he had seen Stefan at the boarding house in 1953, became suspicious of him, and decided to research the local TV news archives for answers. During her search through the archives, she found a video of a news report from 1953, when a Fell relative reported on the murder of Joseph Salvatore outside of the boarding house. While they were filming, the camera caught a glance of Stefan lurking in the background, and when Alex watched the video, she realized Stefan cannot possibly be human.
  • This revelation led her to drive to the boarding house to confront him, and arrived just in time to see him rushing out of the house with a stake in hand to track down Damon, knowing that he had attacked several more Mystic Falls residents. When Alex demanded to know what he is, he informed her that she already knew before finally admitting that he is a vampire. He also assured her that he would never hurt her and begged her not to tell anybody.
  • Meanwhile, Logan convinced Jenna to invite him for dinner at her house, and while he was there, he sneaked into Jeremy's room and stole the "Gilbert Watch," which was later revealed to actually be a vampire compass at that night's Founder's Council meeting with Elizabeth Forbes, Richard Lockwood, and Carol Lockwood.

September 30, 2009[]

  • Stefan met Alex at an outdoor café the morning after she confronted him about his identity. He then agreed to answer her questions about vampires so long as she would give him the day to explain himself before she decided whether or not to tell anyone what she learned.
  • Damon brought the still-alive Vicki to the boarding house after he nearly killed her the night before, and spent the day trapped inside with her due to the fact that Stefan still had his daylight ring. He called Stefan and threatened to go after Elena and Alex at nightfall and attack her if he didn't return his ring before then. While he waited for Stefan to bring the ring to him, he got bored and decided to feed Vicki his blood to heal her so he could have some company. The two then got drunk and fed on each other all day while they danced and partied until sundown.
  • Vicki, drunk on bourbon and vampire blood, told Damon about her life, her family, and how she felt as though she had no future. Damon insisted that the only thing that could help her was death before he snapped her neck, knowing that she had his blood in her system. Soon after, Vicki awoke confused and in transition, and though Damon was honest about having killed her, she didn't believe him. When she mentioned she just wanted to go home, Damon saw an opportunity to stir up trouble and suggested that she stop by the Gilbert House on her way to see Jeremy, knowing that she would likely be tempted to drink his blood when she realized she had been turned into a vampire.
  • Logan Fell, on the orders of Sheriff Liz Forbes, used the Gilbert Compass to search the woods for the vampire responsible for the recent deaths in Mystic Falls. While there, he found Stefan and Vicki, and when the compass' needle pointed at Stefan, Logan shot him with wooden bullets to weaken him before trying to stake him. However, before Logan could kill him, Damon arrived and saved them by killing Logan.
    • Unfortunately, Vicki was unable to resist the scent of Logan's blood after his death and fed on his corpse, completing her transition and officially becoming a vampire.
  • Alex, overwhelmed by all of the information about vampires that she had learned over the last day, decided to break up with Stefan, though she did promise him she would keep his secret and so would Elena.

October 31, 2009[]

There is a month-long time jump.

  • Vicki was not dealing well with her transition. Stefan tried to teach her to live on animal blood like he did, but she couldn't resist her hunger for human blood, due in part to her issues with drugs when she was human.
  • At the party she attacked and fed on Jeremy after she accidentally bit his lip and was overwhelmed by her hunger after smelling his blood. When Elena tried to pull them apart, she fed on Elena as well. Stefan was then forced to stake Vicki in front of Jeremy in order to save him and his sister from being drained to death.
  • Elena, worried about what the loss of Jeremy's girlfriend would do to him so soon after the deaths of their parents, asked Damon to compel Jeremy to forget his memories of Vicki being a vampire and dying, Alex agreed to it as well.
  • Caroline gave Bonnie the crystal that she had stolen from Damon to wear for her Halloween costume. When Damon tried to take it back from her, it shocked him and prevented him from stealing it. Bonnie then ran to her Grams' house, where Grams recognized the crystal and informed her that it belonged to their ancestor Emily Bennett.

November 1, 2009[]

It's Stefan's birthday.

  • Lexi Branson visited Stefan in Mystic Falls to celebrate his 162nd birthday, as they had presumably done every year for the majority of their friendship.
  • Sheriff Forbes interviewed Matt Donovan, Stefan Salvatore, and Jeremy, Alex, and Elena Gilbert regarding the disappearance of Vicki Donovan. Afterward, the Sheriff later admitted to Damon that she was beginning to wonder if the vampire behind the town's murders could somehow walk in daylight.
  • Grams explained to Bonnie that the amber necklace Caroline stole from Damon is a talisman that belonged to her ancestor Emily Bennett during the Civil War and insisted that Bonnie wear it, as she believed that Bonnie came upon it for a reason and that it would protect her.
  • Bonnie then began experimenting with magic in order to finally learn how to control her newly-awakened powers. She also revealed to Elena and Alex that she is a witch, and proved it by levitating dozens of feathers from Alex's pillow into the air.
  • Damon compelled Caroline to throw a party at the Grill as part of his still-mysterious "master plan." He then fed on and killed a male student before compelling the boy's girlfriend to accuse Lexi of killing him instead.
    • This led Sheriff Forbes and her deputies to the party at the Grill, where they quickly injected Lexi with vervain and forced her outside to deal with her. However, Lexi was able to overpower them and broke out of their hold before attempting to attack them in self-defense. She managed to fight through the multiple wooden bullets Sheriff and her deputies shot into her, but before Lexi could retaliate, Damon rushed in and staked Lexi in front of the Sheriff Forbes to win her trust. It was also revealed that Damon killed Lexi to make the Town Council believe that they caught the vampire in town in order to keep them off Damon and Stefan's trail.
      • Unbeknownst to anyone for several years, there was also a third motive behind Damon killing Lexi-- her presence reminded Damon of how he left her for dead on the rooftop of Will's bar in 1977 after he had seduced her and made her believe he had turned on his humanity for her to punish her for meddling in his life. So, when he created his plan to use Lexi to divert attention away from him and Stefan, he realized that it would also allow him forcibly remove this reminder of his past misdeeds by killing her.
  • Caroline's and Matt's relationship began in this episode after Caroline became too drunk at the party and Matt drove her home to make sure she got there safely. Caroline, feeling rejected after having been treated badly by Damon at the party, asked Matt to stay the night with her, and the two ended up cuddling in her bed all night.
  • Stefan, furious that Damon killed his best friend to cover his own murderous tracks, told Alex that he had no choice but to kill him to protect everyone else. However, when he finally confronted his brother, he decided to stake Damon in the stomach at the last moment, and stated that while he had done something awful, he had saved his life several days earlier, so he wasn't going to kill him right now.

November 30, 2009[]

It is the first Monday after Thanksgiving Break.

  • Damon apologized to Stefan for killing Lexi and offered to adopt Stefan's animal blood diet in order to try to make it up to him.
  • Emily Bennett haunted Bonnie's dreams by using her crystal talisman to form a connection with her while she slept.
  • Damon increased the pressure on Caroline to retrieve the crystal talisman from Bonnie, as he needed it for his still-secret plans.
  • Alaric Saltzman arrived to Mystic Falls and replaced the deceased William Tanner as the new history teacher. He then befriended both Jeremy and Jenna and gave Jeremy a second chance at passing history by assigning him an extra credit paper on local history.
  • Stefan set out to "brother-bond" with Damon in hopes of finding out what is his "diabolical master plan" was. After spending the day with him, Damon finally revealed why he returned to Mystic Falls and what he's been hiding from him all this time-- Katherine didn't actually die in the fire in the old Fell's Church, but was instead magically sealed within the tomb below it by Emily Bennett, and so he intended to free Katherine from the tomb with the crystal, since the comet that bound the spell had recently passed overhead, creating the necessary conditions to break the spell.
  • After Bonnie had several strange encounters with the talisman and Emily's spirit throughout the day, Elena, Alex, Caroline, and Bonnie held a séance at the Gilbert House to speak to Emily and learn what she was trying to tell her. During the séance, Emily possessed Bonnie before quickly fleeing the scene in Bonnie's body toward the church.
  • Damon was the first to find Bonnie/Emily at the ruins of Fell's Church, followed by Stefan, Elena, and Alex shortly afterward. Once they had all arrived, Emily revealed that, in order to protect Katherine from death in the fire in 1864, she had to protect the other twenty-six vampires inside as well, who would all be released along with Katherine if Damon got his way. Damon reminded Emily that they had made a deal, but Emily believed destroying the crystal was the best way to protect Mystic Falls from the wrath of the tomb vampires, so she used pyrokinesis to cause the talisman to explode. In a fit of rage, Damon attacked and fed on Bonnie and almost killed her. Fortunately, Stefan gave her his blood to heal her wounds, though Bonnie's status as a witch prevented Damon and Stefan from compelling her to forget what happened.
  • That night, both Elena and Alex took the very-confused Bonnie back to her house and confessed to her that Stefan and Damon are vampires.
  • Jeremy started researching into his family's history by reading one of the Gilbert journals with the intention of using it as a source for his extra-credit history paper. He also began sketching again, indicating that he was starting to finally heal after the deaths of his parents.
  • Logan Fell magically reappeared at the Gilbert house to visit Jenna, and it was revealed that he had been turned into a vampire when he insisted that she invite him inside, though Jenna, angry at him for blowing her off and not knowing that he had died, refused to do so.

Late 2027/Early 2028[]

  • Ryan Clarke approaches Andi in a Triad Detention Facility. He's trying to solve a problem and believes that she is able to help him. From experience, he doesn't believe anyone should be thrown into a dark hole and forgotten about. He shows her the keys and they come to an agreement and releases her.
